I have a question concerning stress fractures, particularly dealing with how quickly they can become noticeable. Today I did a 20 minute threshhold pace session on the road, which is a fair amount faster than my daily training. I noticed a bit of pain on the bottom of the outside of my left ankle during the run, but nothing close to the point of causing me to stop mid workout. But, as the hours passed after my run, I noticed the pain more and more just walking around. Having an intramural flag football game tonight, I decided to sprint up a few flights of steps to really stress the ankle, and although I didn't experience any sharp pains, it's been pretty sore just walking on it since that time (I obviously didn't play in the football game).
The weird thing is that there's no swelling, but it is sore to any pressure applied to it. I'm no anatomy expert, so I'm unsure of which bone I'm actually talking about (possibly the talus?) but it's the rounded bone that sticks out on the outside of the ankle, and my pain seems to be concentrated on the lower half of this protruding bone.
So, is it possilbe that a stress fracture could develop so quickly that I'm fine one day and hurting the next, or is something else to blame here? Any and all help is appreciated, as I was atleast planning to race my first 5k in 2 months this Saturday, but I'm not sure now.
Thanks in advance.
