Short course.
Faster than Tuohy, whose high school PR was 16:06, which was a HS 5k record until now according to Milesplit.
So impressive. It is an absolute crime that we couldnt have Brown, Thorvaldson and Hutchins running in the same race this year because of Covid rather then watching them individually destroy their competition in three different "championship" races and wonder what could have been.
Tuohy would have run a 15:30 on this course. But that's how it goes.
its cross country.......kids don't control the course make up. ....whatever the course is, this kid is historically fast at the moment.
let's see in a few weeks if she jumps on the track........maybe mary cain type times in the near future.
and she was through mile one under 5:02......so unless the mile mark was also wrong.....the kid is fast
You are correct. The course is what it is. And it goes in the books. Just some records are more equal than others. 5:02 is fast. Tuohy ran 14:57 the first mile at Goddard. LOLL. That's laying it out there.
Edit: *4:47.

For what it's worth I ran the boys race with GPS and I got 3.09 miles. Make of that what you will. Also the crowd at the finish line was the loudest I've ever heard at a running event.
So that would be short of 5K by about 200 yards.
5k is 3.11.......so 3.09 is about 50 yds short......but gps will never be that accurate over 5k with turns......
You are correct. I'm multitasking so I am not paying attention. 50 yards is right.
Btw, the first mile at Goddard was 4:57. Made a mess of that too. :)

My math says more like 30 meters (3.09 *1,609.3). Wide course and a few turns can cut some more off via tangents. Maybe 50 meters total? 10 seconds max? probably less.
Perfect weather and a pretty flat, firm course helps.
That works. I don't think bein short was the main issue with the course, just that it was lightening fast. Still 8-10 seconds is quite a difference given the time.

A few other kids I saw on Strava had anywhere up to 3.14, so I think it depended on your specific watch band/type and how soon you stopped after crossing. Mine tends to be a few hundreths of a mile less than others in races
Nope. This is a town full of engineers. We know how to measure.
Whatever the GPS watches are saying you can subtract 0.05 to 0.10 miles from that because GPS watches always give a reading that is longer than the actual distance. A true 5k will always come out around 3.15-3.2+ on a GPS watch. If I had to guess without actually measuring the course I would say it is around 3.05-3.07 miles but that is just a guess.
I hope they have a better camera angle at the finish. From the cart we couldn't see her cross the finish line.
