It seems like a lot of you are under the impression that this is really happening. Warren and Schumer are currently promoting the theory that the president has the power to forgive student loan debt, and are asking Biden to slash up to $50k for everyone once he takes office. Their theory of the powers vested in the president by the Higher Education Act of 1965 doesn't have broad acceptance, including from Biden, who supports $10k of loan forgiveness, but wants CONGRESS to do it.
This seems like an obvious case of a minority party pushing for radical reforms when they don't hold power, hoping it will create some leverage to get a much smaller concession as part of the next Covid aid package.
