Calment's identity was almost certainly assumed by her daughter. There is a good bit of evidence indicating this to be so, and her claimed age was so far away from the next nearest super centenarians, who tend to be clustered around 117, as to be statistically impossible. An American woman reached a fairly well verified 119, so the Japanese lady has to keep hanging in there for a bit. I'm pulling for her.
I've read this claim about Calment, and as far as I can tell there is close to zero actual evidence that it happened, but a lot of speculation that it could have happened. As has been pointed out, Calment's claim is among the most validated among all super-centenarians. If hers is a lie then you can't trust anyone's.
There is a picture of Calment as a 70 year old, taken in 1945. If her daughter had assumed her identity, she'd have been 47 in the photo and it does not look like a photo of a 47 year old woman.
If Jeanne was actually Yvonne, you'd have to believe that a 36 year old woman started pretending to be her 58 year old mother and no one noticed.
I think it's more plausible that she was the Usain Bolt or Katie Ledecky of not dying. She was much, much, much better at failing to die than anyone else.
