A “healthy diet” is highly individualized. Part mental too. Vegans wreck themselves having to plan meals without a face in it.

The literature and science of biochemistry at the cell level is overwhelmingly present, in support of optimal nutrition influencing optimal performance. The evidence is definitive-but, don't believe me, look for yourself. Even at the basic level of metabolism, if your body does not have the ability to make what it needs to function properly because it is lacking nutrients (e.g., Iron for Hemoglobin), and also to catabolize (break down) the toxic elements from junk food or by-products of metabolism (i.e.,enzymes for recycling urea so it doesn't become ammonia); even day to day body functions will be affected, let alone performance. I just studied Metabolic Fitness with Dr. Bryan Walsh for a year; which was based on research papers and biochemical principles at the cell level. I advocate always to be your own authority, rather than placing your trust in anything that is said, even from people who claim to be experts. It is quite a rabbit hole to learn ALL the reasons why and gain ALL the wisdom that is out there in the research literature; the evidence in research for optimal nutrition for best performance vs. disease requires more than reading one experts' version. Please consider that long term effects catch up with what we do to our magnificent bodies, and that the furnace theory of a fast runner who eats junk food does not mean that their fast performance is optimized due to poor diet-they could provide better nutrients for their biochemical needs.
