i'd consider 10 pretty standard for hs kids just racing 5k, so running 16 when you're racing 10k seems reasonable....
Our team, which then and now routinely finishes in the top 10 at D1 XC, did 13-16 miles every Wednesday after a workout on Tuesday with another 17-20 mile long run on Sundays. Many guys did this as the second half of a double. This is nothing to write home about.
Bart go read running with the buffaloes rn and don't come back until it's finished

You don't really need a longer run for a 10k than you do for a 5k. Running for 70-90 mins 1-2x/week is fine. For most runners that is more like 12-14 miles. After that you tend to be better off putting the mileage elsewhere when racing short distances. But if you have a cool 16 mile trail or something, it isn't like doing 13 more mins of running is going to ruin your training or anything....
I want to say this thread was done by one of the Duke boys intended as a low key way to boost views on the YouTube but isn’t barthlomew a long time poster?
Yes this is Puke XC runner marketing for sure

Do college coaches encourage these social media posts for recruiting? Do they just spring up? Are certain runners encouraged to do this?
One hopes no one is encouraged to do this, as they all end up looking like self-indulgent d-bags. A Duke specialty, of course.
Just shut up and train.
Seems like you is either not was smart enough or is rich enough to get into Duke, if you ask me.

I ran for Duke 20 years ago, we did 17-20 mile long runs and still sucked. This is nothing new, Norm is a lousy coach playing war of attrition.

Should we tell him?
Norm retired in July. Check yo facts
I did 16 milers in highschool while training for footlocker nationals. Chump change. And I'm a miler.

WTF that's almost a marathon. Seems a bit excessive for a college XC plan.

You obviously never ran a marathon before. There’s a saying, “The marathon starts at mile 20.”
Bartholomew_maxwell and David45’s weekly posts dwarfs their weekly mileage.
If they are running this much, how come they are not better? Really.
I ran for a Top 10 ranked Div 1 XC team in the 90's. It was the low-mileage era and we would run 60-70 miles a week with our longest Sunday run probably only 10 miles. Maybe 12 if we went really far. You'd sometimes end-up with your long day being an interval day since you were doing something like a 3 mile warmup out to the golf course, 5 x mile with some jogging in between, and then the 3 mile run back.

16-mile long runs aren't long at all, esp. for people who are doing 80-100 mpw.
Even when I'm running 45 MPW, my LR is 16 miles. I find I get a ton of fitness out of it.
Heck, some of the better BYU & NAU guys are doing 20+ on LR day.
Yeah actually NAU does two long runs a week according to that thread on their training. A mid week 16 miler and weekend 20 miler. It’s a great way to boost mileage but only have to run once that day. Also, doesn’t Wetmore prescribe a 20 miler every Sunday. 16-20 wont take much to recover from because severe glycogen depletion still hasn’t happened.,Now if they were doing say a hard 24 miler all the time then that would be counterproductive. Especially training for just a 10k.

16 miles is not almost a marathon. It's an appropriate long run for anybody running 75-80 mpw or more, so I'm not really seeing the issue here at all.
I did regular 15-16 mile long runs every Sunday AM when I was a late 40s / early 50s local schmo running 45 mpw. It's longer than most XC guys go, but it seems like a great idea to me. Didn't Wetmore's Buffaloes do that every week?
Seems pretty standard in plenty of programs. I know of some that have several athletes that go longer as well.
As a libertarian, I am outraged that these young men at a CHRISTIAN school like Duke U. are being infected by liberal extremist ideology. I firmly believe that cross country mileage should be CAPPED by the NCAA so that Scholar-Athlete-Worshippers can have sufficient time for HARD intervals on the track followed by prayer.
This disease of "high mileage" and "easy workouts" is liberal propaganda peddled by known Chinese Communist Party loyalist Tom "Tiaman" Schwartz. If Tianman is so sure that he is clean, why doesn't he release his tax records?
I'm not Trump supporter, but this is exactly the type of thing that will get him reelected in November.
MAGAKAG.
