I don't understand why people are so desperate to prove it was engineered. I haven't seen any convincing evidence -- as if there would even be any. Modern molecular bio techniques are 'scarless' and DNA is cheap to buy in any sequence.
Seems as if they should be running with the idea that it was an accidental release of a cataloged wild strain. THAT idea still holds plenty of water.
I guess they want to paint the Chinese researchers as truly evil, not just incompetent.

You missed, or ignored. that there are published scientific papers from a laboratory in North Carolina stated they "engineered" a very infectious strain of Coronavirus. And also that the U.S. lab "engineered" it from samples from Wuhan, China. And that the U.S. lab paid a lab in China to help them with the "engineering" process.
Truly evil would be the U.S. for starting the process in the first place. It is not a stretch of the imagination to believe that under Trump's regime he sent a covert op to Wuhan, China to release the "engineered" virus as a way of getting back at China for beating Trump on his trade wars. The U.S. is now that evil, and incompetent. because Trump failed to realize the virus could not be contained within China.
