It's impossible to beat any running or jumping record by more than 2 feet. No matter how far you go, it's always your 2 feet that get you there.

Beamon improved the WORLD RECORD by roughly 6.6%, while Allman improved the American record by roughly 1.3%. So nowhere near Beamon-esque, but impressive effort from her nonetheless.

Sexist.
Beamon set world record. this is American record.
Slow your roll.
Sorry to burst a bubble here, but yet another outlier performance coming in T and F at a time when there has been no serious competition since last year and anti-doping has been inactive for months.

obviously athletes aren't getting injured as much trying to cram for competitions - giving them a more uninterrupted and consistent flow of training...
Bob Beamon broke and event and won an Olympic Gold. Val Allman has set a national record in a meet attended by maybe a dozen people. Some perspective please.
But good for her. Goes to show what can be achieved when athletes can focus on training without the pressure and logistical challenges of having to compete all over the world

holy schnikes! i have seen things like this in high school. not even that rare. but 10 feet at the professional level? wonder if she had been showing that kind of distance in practice.
or new PED regimen.
Oddly, if she starts throwing consistently at around 230 I be more likely to believe that drugs may have played a part. Physics and timing play such a big part in discus its possible to pop a big throw in a low key atmosphere where everything just goes right. Throwers PR in practice all the time but often have troubles replicating in a meet and the more complex the throw execution and importance of angle/speed/etc (think discus or hammer) the more outliers. So its possible, wonder what her series was and what anyone else threw?
It's a huge breakthrough, but in a technique-heavy event like the discus, it does happen. As a few others have noted, everyone has thrown farther in practice than their real PR. Some people always do (which indicates that they have trouble dealing with the pressure of competition), but you take enough throws in practice that it's inevitable that you will at least some of the time. Also, you can take risky throws in practice, trying for more velocity than you know you can safely control.
This is a great achievement so why not just tout it as that. Comparing it to Beamon is silly. She improved the American record by a little over 1%. Beamon improved the world recrod by a little over 6%.
I am with sprintgeezer on questioning the titme trial marks. There is no pressure or anxiety about place, an athlete can focus on themselves, pacing is perfect, etc. Beamon made his mark on the biggest stage .
Again, this is a nice mark if/if not it is ratified but should not be compared to Beamon or any other mark.
I don’t get it, is Rojo saying that Bob Beamon is a woman

Yeah well I’m no throws expert, but I have done my fair share. Everyone has a huge practice PB, the trick is always to replicate it in competition.
Was this a real comp? IDK about these “time trials” we’re seeing now.
Maybe I should lower my PB’s to training/TT efforts.
Regardless, great speed of release, excellent timing!
How do you time trial an event where time is not the unit used to measure performance?

A more uninterrupted and consistent flow of something, for sure.

Not taking anything away from the athlete or the performance, both are awesome. Another great performance this summer by American athletes who should be in Tokyo competing as I write. I watched her compete last summer in Des Moines at USATF.
However, your headline is cringe-worthy at the least. Beamon's was a world record, for a gold medal in the Olympic Arena. His record stood for over 23 years. He should not have to "Move Over".
I feel you actually insulted both athletes and both performances for click bait.
impressive none the less--I assumed that the record was set at mile-high altitude, but the record was basically at 2000 ft.
Altitude doesn't help the discus.

First, I said training/TT efforts. Second, in DT you can optimize conditions, as you can in a TT by using specific pacers, comp, etc.
In DT you can not only wait for a favorable day, but you can throw when you want during the day, and during your series—no set order, no time limits, etc. It makes a giant difference, also in JT. I remember going out to throw just because conditions were perfect, it was so much fun. Not just huge individual throws, but great series. So much fun in those 2 events when everything is right.
This is similar to the guy with the 500 lb. squat and sub-5:00 mile.
It's nice but we do not know all the circumstances.
I saw the guy running the sub-5:00 mile step on the line at least 3 times in
the first lap! Afterward, you could not see his feet!
