I’m a 50-year-old man (next month), 5'10", 260 lbs former recreational powerlifter with a BIG gut, a 42" waist (lots of muscle & fat), and a commercial grade treadmill (Sole TT8). I'm in poor overall cardio condition, but I have no known heart health issues.
My goal is to eventually train up to a 30-minute run (on pavement) at an 8 mph or 7.5 minute/mile pace.
Is this achievable for a man my age who’s just starting out?
Several years ago I worked up to a 30 minute 6.5 mph or 9.2 minute/mile pace on my treadmill, but then I pulled my groin the first time I tried running on pavement, thus ended my running. Since then I’ve had a couple other minor groin pulls trying to get back on the wagon.
If my goal is reasonably achievable (I know it’ll be hard, and it’ll take a long time), where would I start?
Can anyone recommend progressive programs designed for middle-aged starters?
Thanks so much.
