"Better lineup" seems very different from "loaded . . . in terms of future accomplishments," especially if "future accomplishments" include things like 1500m results.

For a better lineup, 1981 UTEP. But it's a bit like comparing a great NCAA basketball team with an NBA All-Star lineup.

And I'd expect far more made of yesterday's Jakob national record 5K. I guess we'll revisit that during Pandemic 2047.

That Stanford Team with Hall, Luchini, Robison, Tenforde, and Don C(cant remember last name for some reason). I remember they won with high 20 or low 30 pts. Top 4 waited maybe 20 seconds for 5th runner to come in the finish area. That was a very impressive team.

Ian Dobson and Don Sage. I was missing someone there.

Great job Jon. Some other tidbits from the '08 race:

Tasmin Fanning of Virginia Tech finished 3rd. Compare to Peter Seufer's 4th place finish this past fall.

Ryan Hill finished 104th as a freshman for NC State

German dropping out was a HUGE story back then. He was lighting it up that whole year, from his HS senior year into his frosh XC season. Just easily beating guys who went on to do well in this race.

IIRC, German started to pull away from the chase pack before he dropped out. He at least claims he was going to make a run at Rupp and Chelanga. Perhaps we'd know for sure if the camera had been on the chase pack.

He also won US Junior XC in '09, beating Derrick and Puskedra.

People around here probably don't get it now, but he was the heir apparent back then. What a talent.

"The Rise and Fall of German Fernandez" would make a great story.
