I cut back beer. That along with actually running again has helped dramatically. After a year of no activity and lots of beer I'm down a solid 20lbs and should be good to go with another 10. My new beer rule is no beer unless I log 15 miles for the day.
Way to go!! 20 lbs is impressive!!
I never really drank at all, even in college. Then I found myself in social circles where everyone liked to have a few beers on the weekends, so I joined in...but again, only a few beers, once or twice a week at most.
I cut it all out earlier this year. I think I just run way better without any alcohol at all. Gonna make it a lifelong habit. I'll probably be a teetotaler except for Christmas Eve.
I’m at 6’2”/183 right now. Getting down to 170 or so over the summer would be amazing. Holy cow it gets hard to shed pounds after the easy weight comes off though. The balancing act of eating enough so you don’t feel weak for workouts and don’t become a total jerk because you are hangry all the time while still running a deficit is not one I have figured out.

Nice to see some familiar faces in this thread...
I'm prepping for a HM "time trial" on July 1-11 (TBD - depending on life - likely before July 4th) - started a V02 training program and will keep you all updated!
Current weight - 164.7 (high reading, most likely 161-162)
Goal weight - 152.0
Goal Time - sub 1:16:30
M - EZ 8m
T - 2m w/u, 4x3min @ 5:25 pace, 4x2min @ 5:25 pace 2m c/d
W - EZ 8m
Th - EZ 12m w 6x20s sprints

Start with the 10 pcs of fruit of day, preferably before lunch ... it will crowd out so many other foods and keep you full.
Game Changer!
Usually all Bananas and Clementines .. 5-7 of each per day ... Less fruit in the winter down to prob 5 pcs and usually 10-12 in summer
Wait. You eat 5 bananas a day?
Question for those that do a lot of stepping stone workouts. I was going to give it a try on Saturday as part of a 15 mile “long” run. I was going to try to knock out 3 sets with an extended warmup and cool-down. What are the targets supposed to be again? If I was amending this for more HM focus would that change anything?
Was thinking 6:40/6:10/5:40. Does that sound about right?

Wow you're tall Worm! Good luck getting down to 170! I'm sure you'll do it.
Yep definitely gotta have enough fuel to power through workouts but it's tough!

The way I was told on here, it's MP+40, MP+20, MP-20.
I might have died if I tried to do it HMP+40, HMP+20, HMP-20.
angryjohnny mentions here MP+40, +10, -20
Thanks guys. Will give 6:50/6:20/5:50 a shot.
I always think of it as tempo+60s, tempo+30s, tempo.
But if you go to Daniel's calculator for a 2:40 marathon, MP is 6:06 and threshold is 5:47, so you end up with the same answer.
If you're going 15 miles anyway why not do the 4 sets? I think of it as a general high end aerobic run, not something specifically tailored to a goal race (and wouldn't think about doing highly race specific workouts 5 months out anyway).
Yeah, it's absolutely absurd but unfortunately too much apres on the slopes, a penchant for tasty IPAs daily, and almost zero running for a year calls for drastic measures to begin to reverse things.
I dream of the day when I can finally be close to normal weight and consume regularly again without any ill effects. Until then I'll just have to keep exploring my newfound gin fascination.
This is an easier way for me to think about it given I feel like I have a much better handle on 1 hour pace than M pace.
I am increasing mileage pretty substantially this week vs the last 4-6 weeks (from 60ish average up to low 70s) so was trying to be mindful of not injecting too much intensity. That said, perhaps I’ll go out for 4 reps and see how I feel.

All of this is the right answer.
Start with the Daniels’ question: what is the PURPOSE of this run? Stepping Stones is high end aerobic work. Don’t think of it as Marathon specific or HM specific. If you control it to the approximate efforts described, you’ll be good and would have no problem completing 4 sets.
And those IPAs have soooooooo many calories. May have to stick to the light swill WH. That saint archer gold ain’t bad
Amen, RRR. I've almost all but swore off the IPAs but will have a couple on a good long run day. I'll do some sessions here and there otherwise it's a couple pils for me.
Good news is I'm solidly back into a shmedium now for shirts but somehow I grew a butt and am still not quite able to fit into the smaller shorts! No big deal accept ALL my shorts, save for 3 pair, are still not fitting.
Stone or others - What is the exact prescription for this "stepping stone" workout? I've seen it mentioned in the last few weeks but am still foggy on the details of the entire workout.
Working Harder- Jenkins never gave you a “stepping stones” workout? If Canova is God then Jenkins is like Moses or something as far as I’m concerned.
Another one that I like from their toolbox is 14-20k alternating k’s. Trying to average mp overall with the ons around hmp and the floats at like mp + 20s per mile (assuming hmp is about 20s/mile faster than mp)
I'm sure it would have been in there if I hadn't had to step away for medical reasons. As it was I ended up getting about six-eight weeks in with Nate before I had to pull the plug.
Alternating Ks was one of my favorites. Ran that workout a few times, the first time being before I hired Nate, and that nearly killed me 7 Ks in. Second and third time was 10x1k on/off and it was winding down nicely to near goal MP average. Actually have my first of those in another week and a half.

Would you recommend Nate Jenkins as a coach through his online service? Weird coincidence that I had just emailed him asking for more information on his online coaching services. Specifically because of his Canova training experience/knowledge.
