It's no secret. He has said many times that he spent a year in Japan as a kid. In race coverage photos, you can see his mom is Japanese.
Well, since whites are now a minority in most of the US, obviously he could talk about him being called racist things while being a minority.

Looks like my thread last night about being stopped while running by a couple kids in an old, lifted SUV was deleted (probably for comparing the kids to a poster here, so I won't this time). I'm Asian. The kids stopped their vehicle next to me. I was expecting at first that it would be someone asking for directions. Instead they asked me, "Are you a Trump supporter?" The kids had long, unkempt, blond hair under their trucker hats and smirks on their faces, looking like prototypical Trump supporters. It was clear that they were wanting to prank me some how. I was immediately figuring how I'd run between houses to escape. I declined to answer. I cocked my head sideways a bit and just gave them a look. The driver asked again, then mumbled, "I guess your not a Trump supporter?" as he drove off. I got my phone out afterwards and had video record ready in case they circled around and tried to do anything.
I wasn't in fear of my life, (maybe if I was black?). But it was maybe the first "Heil Hitler" moment that I can remember - where I felt like they wanted to praise the President to show I didn't deserve to be harrassed.

I've lived in America my entire life and I've been harrassed before. This one is memorable because it was recent (Wednesday evening), and like I said before, the first time I've felt pressure to praise a President by random strangers. That's just screwed up. Like I said, these kid made it a "Heil Hitler" moment for me.

Im honestly curious about Joey's story. I don't doubt that racism exists. I believe you can find examples of racism in every direction in this country, including from minorities towards white people. I also believe that as a white person, I am far less likely to experience it, and far less likely to experience the worst of it, so I acknowledge that brown/ black people definitely have it worse, and that there is even still institutional racism that we havent stamped out, and that's a problem.
But I'm not sure what Joey is relaying was racism from what he reported. From his story, it sounds like it could have just been idiot kids being idiots in a non racist way. Why did you say it was a "Heil Hitler moment?" I've never heard that phrase before, what does it even mean?

I was fueling my car at a gas station in late 2008 but before the US presidential election that year. 3 or 4 young black guys in another car there asked me what I thought of Obama. I'm white. Depends a lot on how it was asked and why. If they are just happy and excited and wanted to see if someone else shares that excitement, it's just a conversation. The question to me was not as open ended as the one to you. "Are you a Trump supporter?" On the surface, I didn't have something that I would consider reportable to the police for instance. But I had reason to believe I was going to be pranked just by the facial expressions on their faces.

I concede that they could have been harassing other people too. I logged into Nextdoor to see if there were other complaints, but didn't see anything. I wouldn't post anything on that platform about it because you are not anonymous and can become a target.
I call it a "Heil Hitler" moment because I felt like they wanted me to praise the President to avoid harassment. That thought came to mind because of scenes in "The Sound of Music" where characters say that to maintain the facade/ pretend they support Hitler.

I think it’s hard to know from the circumstances presented what the situation was, you probably had to be there to experience it.
That said, despite many shortcomings the US is one of the most racially tolerant countries in the world. I’ve lived many years overseas (mostly as a racial minority), been to every continent except Antarctica and seen not only how people treat me but also other races. People judge you very quickly based on the color of your skin, regardless of how many years you’ve lived there or how fluently you speak the language. It can be very frustrating trying to assimilate. In more than one place it was basically minor stuff, mostly due to ignorance, but there were a couple pretty notable occasions where I was legitimately scared due to someone targeting me, likely due to the fact that they were having a bad day and wanted to take it out on someone who didn’t look like them or some deep-rooted hatred for white people (or maybe they were just psychotic and I was in the wrong place wrong time). Who knows. Across the world most people I’ve met have been great, but to suggest racism is some purely American phenomenon is ignoring is pretty naive. The banning of black people in Chinese public places during covid has been pretty well documented. Doesn’t mean most people in China feel that way, but it’s the bad apples that stand out.
