Clinton’s culpability for using the private servers does not constitute a precedent for deciding what is appropriate in the Trump case. Yes, Garland has a tough choice, but he should decide based on the merits of the charges in this situation given the evidence. Whichever way he goes, he will be criticized. But the documents had to be retrieved and the DOJ would have been criminally liable for not doing so.
