What do you mean? I saw they signed a great recruiting class and have great coaches on staff with lots of NCAAs success.
They have a great incoming class but none of those athletes are distance. The distance class consists of 1 girl and 1 guy. It doesn't help that they are projected to graduate their # 1,3 and 4 on the men's side and #2, 4, 6 on the women's side, plus losing Howell to the portal. Illinois will cut back on distance and invest in other areas.
That’s why haveman is not there anymore, terrible recruiting job the last few years. I’m sure if they hire a good coach that can actually recruit and coach, Illinois can be a solid distance program.
They only signed one guy and one girl distance athletes for this fall. Petros doesn’t give a crap about distance events. Nobody wants this job. Haveman knew she wasn’t coming back and quit recruiting kids this year.
I visited the area for three weeks. In my opinion it's a hard sell for a family man or family woman. How long have you been there?
15 years. Went to WVU, worked at WVU and I can tell you it's a great place to live and work. I don't know what "the area" is but visiting somewhere doesn't give you a full, complete or accurate picture of how a place is. I've seen kids who have grown up in college towns, go to the university in the same town and realize: "oh wow I never knew this place, or this when I was growing up." You are certainly entitled to your opinion but in making such a statement without context of your experience or knowledge is, well, a tad misleading.
So to recap for our viewers: a guy who visited "the area" for three weeks says: "you don't want to live there." Myself who both lived and worked at WVU says: it's a fantastic town, great people and a nice place for families.
West Virginia in whole is a Sh**hole. I coached in WV for a year, and I hated every moment of it. Within 2 weeks of being in the area, I was on the phone looking for other jobs.
The community is what did it for me. The local rednecks had zero issues with calling my athletes the N word to their face. They would physically walk up to the kids and call them the N word and told them to leave the random store that they were in.
Just saying...WV is not a place that is welcoming to diversity.
The Assistant Coach will assist with the daily coaching and recruitment activities of the NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Track & Field and Cross Country program.Assist the Head Coach with all areas of the program including...
The Assistant Men’s and Women’s Cross Country and Track & Field Coaching Instructor works under Head Men’s and Women’s Cross Country and Track & Field Coaching Instructor providing support for the organization of the program...
So you are trying to tell us that Nobody wants a big power 5 job in the Big10 that pays six figures? Sounds like you were not being considered for this job lol. Will see by the hiring if Petros doesn't care about Distance. Haveman put this program in hole by stop recruiting good distance runners years before Petros got there.
Nice try… not that I can prove or disprove your anecdotes but I’d be willing to bet that you are lying. The vast majority of West Virginians are happy to embrace anybody who also embraces the heritage and proud history of the state. Heritage which includes ceding from Virginia during the Civil War to become an anti-slavery Union state. West Virginia State University was established as one of the first state HBCUs in the entire country. Racism exists everywhere and is a scourge on civilization. But stop perpetuating “hillbilly West Virginia” stereotypes. It’s lazy and hacky. Anyone would be lucky to coach at WVU.
