Then what is the number?

15 minute mile?

10 minute mile?

8 minute mile?

At the Fifth Avenue Mile [not Marathon], it's about 150-200 (nonelites) of the field of 3000 or so (males) that break 5:00.

This is bogus, because it's chrono-timed on a street (which might be slightly downhill overall). And many of 3000 field (males) are in the 40+ crowd. On a track, I'm guessing 15-20% of the prime-age field.

If 20000 US highschoolers run 5:00 officially every year, and maybe twice that unofficially (or with a smidge of training), and there are something like 10 million high school males (USA), then it's a 1 in 250 chance in the general population at that age.

But the fact that Duke basketball hasn't seen too many 5:00 mile guys over the years shows that it's a specific skillset.

It amazes me that people think Bolt will be good at a mile simply because he's fast at 100m.

I don't think Bolt could run 4:59 in the mile because he's fast at 100m. I think he could do it because he's a remarkable athlete in general, and that time is generally very unremarkable and achieved by hundreds and hundreds of people every year. While he's certainly predisposed to a very different type of running, I don't believe 4:59 requires a great deal of specialization or physical gifts, at least not to the level that Bolt would be unable to achieve them.

When I was on track teams in my younger days, the distance guys and the sprinters always were fooling around running each others distances after practice. In all the years we did this, I never saw a sprinter come anywhere near breaking 5. More often than not, they'd give up right after the third lap. They (the sprinters) would talk about the mile like it was a marathon.

I find it surprising Jon Scheyer couldn't do it. They were always touting how high VO2 Max is (higher than Lance Armstrong's!). Also, I remember watching a game where they said that one of the Plumlee's I think Miles, broke 5 in the mile. That's a (listed) 7 footer we're talking.
