Let's not forget Mary Cain won Gold at the 2014 IAAF World Junior Outdoor Championships over 3000m in 8:58.48, out-kicking a future World XC champion, and Australia's own Jess Hull.
She’s not 19, she’s 18. What is with all you weirdos lying about/taking issue w her age? I’ve known her since she was in 6th grade, my daughter is the same age and has grown up running with her. If you look closely, or see her irl, you can see she clearly has a teenager face. I can still see traces of her little girl face from years ago, even.
And her parents are both tall, her mom is about 6’0”. Jane has phenomenal genetics for running, has pretty much been professionally trained since grade school, and has the natural ability coupled with the mental fortitude and innate love of the sport. Her running building blocks are as close to perfection as can ever be hoped for/achieved.

How does the money "perk up" in high school? I don't think money - pocketed now or expectations of it in the future - have anything to do with this result. If she and her chemical engineer dad (look up average earnings) were this calculating and money hungry they would've come up with a more lucrative and legal alternative.

I'm from NYS and saw a fair amount of Cain and Tuohy; both extraordinary. Cain had incredible range down to 1:59pt and could go all the way to 2miles. Hedengren covers mile thru XC like no one else; even better than Tuohy who was/is a similar type.
Going forward and assuming she stays healthy, I expect Hedengren will enjoy a better career than the other two. Probably not the 1500m runner Cain was (she was truly special) but better across the board. Hedengren makes it look easy.

Cain was top 10 in the world. Hedengren wouldn't even come close to making the American team, never mind be top 10 in the world.
You can't just compare times. It doesn't work like that. Otherwise you could say that Brandon Arrington's 100 and 200 times at Arcadia made him equal to Jesse Owens at the 1936 Olympics.
It's more accurate to compare someone against their peers. Unless Hedengren somehow makes the final of the World Championships this summer, which I highly doubt, then Cain is still a level above Hedengren in the 1500/mile.

Fearless, there are so few great front runners in history, Filbert Bayi in 1974/75, up to Jakob I. now. This girl is absolutely fearless and she is intimidated by no one. Even in her interviews she just exudes a confidence that exceeds her age. That Prefontaine kind of confidence.
By the time 2028 LA comes around she will be the number 1 5k runner in the US and top 10 in the world, barring injury/burnout. If she is healthy, watch out world!

2x USA champion. 9th in the world. Do you not understand how absolutely insane that is for a high school distance runner. Even making that USA team was insane - Simpson, Rowbury, Martinez, Grunewald were all ranked top 10 in the world that year, Moser just outside. Cain finished 2nd.
I know it's easy to discount it all, because times have moved on from that era, and 3:55 is the new 4:00. Not to mention what happened with the rest of Cain's career (or the lack thereof). But frankly nobody since, and nobody before (except maybe Decker) has touched what Cain accomplished in 2013 and 2014. She was it. Hedengren is a star, and her race last night puts her in the history books forever. But Cain was it.

She can go sub-15 now, so I'd imagine she can go at least 4:06 right now as well. I think it's highly likely that she'll surpass Mary Cain at the 1500 (4:04.62) if she gives it a go.

She is already 18. That would be college freshmen age for many. A great time still but we have been here before with Cain and Tuohy. It's different with girls. It seems the timing of their physical maturity is a factor.
Her birthday is September 23, 2006. She's not overaged for her grade at all. She's older than probalby most but virtally everyone turns 18 during their senior year of HS just like she did.
