Sure you would. Then you are off of the team with no scholarship and one of the 100 kids waiting in line take your spot. 90% of distance runners are excited to just get a walk-on spot.
The relevant clear example right now is Olympians Rooks and Corrigan at BYU. Maybe they would still have gone D1, but neither would have had a spot at BYU and the training environment and coaching to become steeple Olympians.
BYU currently has 27 on men x-c roster. If Big 12 pares down to 10 roster limit where do the other 17 go? Ricks College in Rexburg, ID?
Where does Aiden Troutner go?
Why is Brayden Packard allowed to have such long hair?
Roster cuts will impact a Mormon far more than a normal person.
Which Mormon school can 17 BYU runners transfer to?
Son is on an official overnight visit right now for a D3 school. Booked a room, dropped him off earlier and am just hanging out having some food and drink before we depart tomorrow. Today, heard from one of the D1 enrollment schools that was recruiting him and was told they will opt in. Was initially told they would not opt in just a couple of months ago. Said there may be a XC spot for him but don’t know if there will be a t&f spot, and they may have club track for those on the XC team. So, things are moving fast and are hella fluid right now. As I sit here I don’t think D1 is worth all the trouble right now. Loving what I am seeing from this D3 program by the way. Got some D2 schools looking at him too but just not thrilled about the academics. Lots of runners in D1 are about to be cut to get within the roster limits and they will be looking for a home. Unless you are ELITE, it may be difficult to secure a D1 spot

None of this is a surprise of course, but curious what times your son runs for some context, and what conference of the d1 school he was looking st. There are a lot of "lesser" D1 schools out there when it comes to distance running (see the USC/UCLA thread, all the bottom conference teams of mid-majors etc), so think there are still spots for non - elites (depending on your definition of elite) at d1 schools with decent academics. It also feels like there is more relative opportunity in distance running compared to other events, even with the influx of foreigners and roster limits. It helps having an entire season dedicated to distance only. I'm still seeing kids getting spots on top tier d3 teams (when factoring in academics) that are definitely not close to elite (never broken 4:35/10:00/16:00). The exact middle ranked basketball team in d1 ( based on kenpom) has track/cross country, has decent academics, and definitely has non-elites on their roster (only 1 under 50 in the 400, only 3 5kers under 15, etc. - top freshman times in mid distance were 2:00 800 and 4:04 1500 last year). Yes everything is getting more competitive, but it's not like you have to be a blue chip runner to run D1 - someone that considers running as an important part of their college experience still has plenty of opportunity.
