A handicapped runner doesn't compete in an Olympic final. You're talking about a relative handful of athletes on the planet.
She didn't do well despite her limitations, she did as well as her talent allowed. 11th in an Olympic 10k is still international level; it just isn't anywhere near the best. Barring injury she will improve but she has neither the aerobic engine or the speed to beat the best or become one of them.
She IS handicapped. That is a fact, not my opinion as above. It is incredible she got this far. Glen Cunningham and Wilma Rudolf were handicapped as well. Do your homework. Think out of your box.
As long as you have been on this board you dominate and bully and must have the endless last word every single thread with 1000's of posts like a child so your response is no surprise but you are definitely wrong on this one.
I am willing to give her credit for her handicap. Try doing the same.
I can hardly wait for your response again telling me I am wrong. I was super polite in my response to you hoping that you wouldn't start the endless bullying to have the last word and be "right" but you can't help yourself. I am Tapping out because you just have the time for thousands of posts and I dont. Have fun with your responses.
You have a lot invested in this athlete. But they are still excuses. Both Cunningham and Rudolph overcame their early life experiences. They could not have achieved what they did if they hadn't. These aren't the Special Olympics. Valby isn't handicapped. That isn't what x-training is for. I'm sure she avails herself of every option to maximise her abilities - as most top athletes do now.
She took the lead in her first international race. I think this is competing. Not quite sure why the negativity is so strong.
So you would say that about the Japanese runners who typically do the same and end up nowhere? My point was that at an Olympic level it isn't about "fun" but succeeding. That may take everything an athlete has got.
One reason Parker is fun to follow is that she appears to being having fun. All the detractors of Valbymania seem to be missing this key ingredient in their life.
Expect Great Things!!!
Hobby-joggers have fun; international athletes compete.
Lots of people say she should be a marathoner. I'm not sure she has the temperament. Top marathoners are pretty much obsessed - forget trying to avoid the grind of running with cross-training etc. It's 100+ mpw for months/ years. I just don't see PV doing that. Not a criticism(actually the opposite), it's just that she doesn't seem the 'win at all costs' type like say Hasay.
Why hasn't Cranny been able to finish higher in these championship races with her level of talent? Is it subpar training, lack of confidence, both? It's a puzzle to me why she isn't doing better in these races.
She is a beautiful and talented young woman who just became an official olympian and gave a respectable performance after a hard year of racing and winning more championships in a single year than any woman in NCAA history. She will most likely sign a lucrative pro contract soon and is the heavy favorite to win the prestigious Bowerman award later this year. I don't know for sure, but I would not think that she would be going anywhere devastated. Seems like the world is her oyster.

Cranny ran 20:02.8 on the Nuttycombe course her senior year at Stanford (in the 2018 National Championship), while Valby ran 19:17.2 at Nuttycombe in the rain and slop in her season opener last fall.
Most likely troll activity. There’s a lot of that around here, if you haven’t noticed.
help me out then...give me a list of posters I should take seriously, or perhaps those I should not take seriously....in the absence of that trolls are people too

That post was ridiculous. Even Valby said she hoped not to get lapped.

I don’t think we should take anyone seriously on a forum where you can post with two different usernames in the same thread…or post anonymously without having to register.

That said, I actually wonder if Valby looks back and thinks ‘what could have been’. Who knows, but for example, maybe she has a small regret about walking around Paris the same day of the race hunting out for two different nail salons (because the one in the village was closed/booked or whatever?).
Her expectations had been dialed down so low pre-race, possibly she thinks now a better race strategy could have been employed with such a slow first half. With different race tactics, could she have finished several seconds faster? Possibly, which may or may not have even bumped her a higher placing.
But we typically learn more in making mistakes.
This thread was stupid to try and pile-on in the first place, so I didn’t mention it earlier. But the special year and summer of VALBYMANIA has come to a close.
Maybe it is officially over after Valby gives her closing Instagram thoughts. Or maybe Valby will not even post for a long while. She said she is taking a break; it’s in another Sarah Lorge Butler piece:

Her negative mindset heading into these big races sort of bugs me. Her goal was to not get lapped twice. C’mon…
She ended up beating several runners with significantly better PRs than her in her first international race. She should be proud of that.
The biggest question I have is what in the world is the “Fargo” poster referring to when they said Valby is running with a “handicap”? Can we please get an answer as to what they are referring to? If there is actually something to it, it might be very significant wrt to Valby’s future prospects in this ‘sport’.
