This is symptomatic of ignorant American track fandom, I think: believing that every European meet that isn’t a Diamond League is “obscure”. Elaine Thompson-Herah, Jasmine Camacho-Quinn, Femke Bol, Natoya Goule-Toppin, Valarie Allman, Sandi Morris, Ferdinand Omanyala, Akani Simbine, Reynold Cheruiyot, Alison dos Santos, Daniel Stahl, Gianmarco Tamberi…there were a lot of stars at this “obscure” meet.
She also had surgery her senior year and had set the US high school record on the distance prior to that. We have seen other runners with that type of college progression at the same distance. And she did not set the ncaa record right out of the gate. Took two years to progress post surgery. If you play this game, you need to cite something actually analogous. Here we have a 7 second drop to one of the fastest 800m ever run the first year out of high school. Suurrree.
True, but literally everyone is doping at that level.
The race set up perfectly for her because of Werro. I posted that in the other thread last night. You always know where Werro will be. She's a metronome front runner who runs evenly and can sustain for a long time, but lacks an explosive finish.
Wiley got shuffled to the back early but it worked out fine for her once she made her typical move about 50 meters before the final lap.
To me it looked more like she was just blown off the line and ended up in the very back and it wasn't her choice. The look on her face going down the first backstretch seemed to be, "HOLY S##T these European races are FAST!" It looked like she just grabbed ahold of the caboose and rode the train for about 250 meters.

The first lap was fast - the leader was 56.57 and Wiley was maybe 0.5 seconds off that so very close to 57. I think they were 26-26.5 at 200.
Are you kidding? You have never heard of the most protected runner in LRC history who currently runs for NC State? ANYTHING remotely alluding to PEDs and Tuohy and it is gone immediately. Both runners are 100% clean but Wiley gets 1000x the vitriol of anyone else. I'm sure part of it is she is very religious and chose to turn down a secular college in a ridiculously far-Left city to stay in her small hometown and attend a religious affiliated college that is more in line with her values.
Yeah, I totally agree with your take! lol That race went out quick from the getgo, and she was just able to recognize it early (which probably saved her race). BUT, coming from the back like that required that she run 3/4 of the race in lane 2. Some of that just comes with racing the 800, but in an ideal race (with most of it in lane 1), she would have been sub1:57.
downvote this all you want. My point was you are pretty dumb using 9:20 as a freshman in college (coming off injury) as basis for Tuohy's times as a sophomore and junior in college.
If she had the associations and crazy progression that Wiley has, have at it.
Progressions don't always March perfectly in lockstep. When Touhy ran the 8:35 3000, the board went bonkers saying that lines up with 14:40 5000 and 3:59 1500, but for a variety of reasons, we never got those other equivalents.
In Wiley's case she has made big jumps, but it's usually lining up with her other performances.
All of the us stars have had years with dramatic improvement. Touhy 9th to 10th grade/ yr 3 college. Cranny, Houlihan, Schweizer, Monson - first year as pros.
Obviously, Wiley won't have much room to improve as a pro, as 1:57 to 1:53 would pretty much be the limit of possibility. In the 5000 Wiley's pr is now 17:16. Let's say she now goes and runs 15:15. Well that's not a crazy doped up 2 minute PR, it's just lining up her 5000 with her 1500 and 800.
Let's see if she can be steady at 1:58 - 4:02. Ask Wilson, Rogers, H-K, Mu - it's tough to hold this level and not slide back to 2:00.
