If your first paragraph is accurate, then we should agree that there is a problem that a boy can simply say they are a girl and start winning.
Further, sex is not “assigned.” Gender is assigned. Sex is objectively measurable. In fact, with >99% accuracy, sex can now be determined at the embryonic stage even before an embryo implants in the uterus. And it can be measured in 100% of cases after birth. What you are referring to is gender, which is assigned by definition.
Where things get weird is because some are trying to separate sports by gender, when they need to be separated by sex. There is no legitimate policy purpose that is furthered by a division based on how a person “feels” or “identifies has.” To separate on those grounds shows a fundamental misunderstanding of why there’s a division at all.
Once again, 1% or 0.02% or whatever does not deserve to be erased, just because you want to.
People with some 46XY DSD are assigned female at birth based on their anatomy, and often won't discover their karyotype until later in life. Should they be excluded from girls' sports? GOP politicians have no clue because they don't even know or acknowledge such people exist. I even know of one case in which a fetus was assigned male before birth, and reassigned female at birth. (Her mother had a traffic accident while being pregnant, and she got thoroughly examined at the hospital.)
Even if those people consist of only 0.02% or whatever, they do exist among hundreds of thousands of high school and middle school athletes. (0.02% of 100,000 is 20.) Do you want to be excluded from high school sports because the politicians are ignorant about human sex? We are talking about actual human beings, not some political props.
