and who in heat 2 is apt to push the pace? They all look like followers to me, and most of those with what I think are the best kicks (off a slow pace) are in heat 2

Thorton Bott - def not a follower
She certainly did not lead or push the pace in her quarterfinal. Lead a slow preliminary heat I grant you. Perhaps just running smart. Sure looks likely no small qs from 2nd semi final heat though.

No one in heat 2 will really push it. Maybe pick up at 800m. Howell will go to the front.
Thornton-Bott never leads, does she? She is a kicker. She has run 4:08 but that was in a pro race so middle of pack.
The top runners in heat 2 (Howell, Flockhart, Thornton-Bott) will want a reasonable pace they can kick off of.
heat 2 looks very, very competitive to me - I can see 9 runners competing for the (presumably) 5 slots. Of course if somehow heat 1 is a 413 heat anything can happen.
It's hypothetical... She probably has tried blocks with all her track time... Maybe not. But maybe... but who cares if it's standing or out of blocks... I'm not the one who doesn't know the difference between a running start and a standing or crouch start... The point is running a 60 bell lap is not the same as running a 60 from a cold standing start...
Her "57.9" was hand timed in practice with a running start!
Downhill, with the wind, drafting behind teammate in super shoes.

I guess I'm remembering xc races where she took the lead and was aggressive. She's what 25? she should be experienced enough to know what's needed to make the final so maybe she will just sit and kick?

Heat #2: East #1-6, West #7-12
Don't know why this gets downvoted. Do you think this is NOT the way it is done? Take a look at the men's 1500 - heat #1 has East #1-6 and West #7-12; heat #2 has West #1-6 and East #7-12. You may not like the method or agree with it but it is the method that was used.

But it was done differently last year, but supposedly this way 2 years ago.
