i would put birnbaum and leo over salhman. Salhman ran that at prefontaine classic. one hell of an opportunity he had against pros, huge crowd and world stage.
disagree. Colin Sahlman was a beast. No one in the class of '23 was anywhere near as dominant as Sahlman. The only HSers he lost to his entire senior year was his three teammates at Woodbridge, and future 1:46.4 guy Cade Flatt at NBIN. He was better across the board at XC, 800, and 3200 than Birnbaum, and even if you give them the same relative mile fitness I'd take Sahlman's kick any day over Birnbaum's (which is also nothing to yawn over)
Agree. Colin was better than everyone in this field 800m to 5k.
Great race, but a touch disappointing given the high expectations.
What expectations? Most people expected they wouldn't get the HSR. A 3:57.5 is perfectly in line with their progression. 3:53 is light years away from what any of them have shown over 800m/1mile.
A person in the race literally said they were going for the record. Those expectations.
The rabbit did them no favours coming through slow but these guys aren’t Alan Webb, even with the shoes. Great race and meet regardless, and good to see the kids being audacious and going for it
it really puts into perspective just how incredible the Newbury Park lineage was (*is, there's still one more race for the Youngs). Putting aside their three consecutive GOAT XC rosters, having two individuals as insanely dominant over their high school classes as Nico and Colin from the same school is really incredible. Ironically, although Lex and Leo seem to have surpassed Nico and Colin in their 5k and 1500 efforts, neither of the twins (nor Aaron for that matter) have showcased anywhere near the same level of dominance as their older sibling.
would I be correct in assuming that the entire field was Nike-shod? Or was there someone in the field capable of an original thought? You know, the type who grasps that an ice cream float isn't necessarily root beer and vanilla but rather YOUR OWN choice of soda and ice cream.
as frustrating as it was for Mike Smith to see Aaron Sahlman run on an injured leg it musta been nice to see his other prized recruit Clay Shivley run a 4:01. he looked really good out there.

Rabbit was perfect for their level. I was praying he didn't go out in 1:56.

At this level of running, these guys have a pretty good idea of their fitness level and what they are potentially capable of. Now sure, they can have the occasional bad, inexplicable race result. But on the other hand, they are still developing, capable of posting big PR’s.
If I'm not mistaken, Matsatsa is the first black HS sub 4 miler.
I know talking about race triggers some here, but if that stat is correct, I congratulate him, it's not common here in the USA.
Is he also the first HSer under 4:00 who has never run cross country?
What a talent!
Where is his family from? Tinoda Matsata... unusual name. Yes as the other poster says mentioning his race may trigger people but is he of East African descent as one might expect....?
