Exactly…she has now joined the elites like Monson. Hopefully, she can latch onto her again this weekend and bring her PR below 8:50 and possibly close to the CR of 8:41. If all goes extremely well she’s got a shot at another CR, which would bring her close to another elite pro, Schweitzer. 8:20’s are a bit out of reach this week but could possibly be a target in ‘24.

Monson will be running so fast that I don't think Tuohy can try to "latch onto her" this week. I think the leaders will be going at 8:30 pace, or maybe faster (ie low 4:30s at 1600) while more like 8:40 pace would seem to be right for Tuohy (and some others in the race). I can see where if hypotheically Tuohy broke the college record she might not be on camera much of the 2nd half of the race.

Assuming she is feeling good, she just needs to latch on to any pro running at/near that pace. When Schweizer set the record in 2018 she had three pro runners come in right ahead of her tht helped pull her to the final time. Also Koko dropped out, so that may make the pace more manageable.

I’m afraid your opinions are just that, and go beyond based on your anti-Tuohy bias. I’m afraid that the ship has sailed on it just being ignorance. You are the emotional one since you ignore the stated facts. I’m no longer going to take your baiting tactics. Just ask her competitors what they think and your going to get an earful. Cook and Valbo have made their comments about Tuohy and several pro’s have chimed in to these…

When I saw KT come in behind one of these pro’s in 2019, at her first 6K XC race at Lehigh Univesity, in a very respectable 20:11, behind only Aisling Cuffe’s 20:07 (a 26 yo pro and previous Stanford all-American). She was in awe of the diminutive Tuohy. As other pro’s started to stream in, including Cain, most came up to KT to congratulate her in admiration. Katelyn, ever the humble athlete, was amazed at the fuss that was being made of her performance as a HS phenom. I have photographic evidence of this but I resisted posting them here without expressed permission.

You are constantly changing the comparison, in one post it's 'on the TV screen at a DL meet', now it's Schweizer.

If it's Schweizer, there is a reasonable chance that all of Tuohy's prs are in line with Schweizer/Simpson/Purrier college prs by 7/23. Then the real question becomes, how does Tuohy improve as a young pro? (or continuing collegiate), since that's actually where big gains were made by Houlihan, Monson, Purrierre, Cranny, and Schweizer. While it's not guaranteed, there really is no reason Tuohy can't make a nice leap as a pro; pure running focus, pro calendar, new coaching, altitude and faster meets can all help.

Cranny rather than Schweizer is probably the better comp. Cranny was an 'elite young runner', plateaued in college, then surged again to become an elite pro.

Though what you say is a remote possibility, my bet is that Tuohy will very possibly be in the picture the whole race, even if she gets dropped on the last lap. I’m hoping she holds on and we’ll see a good race to the end. I predict she finishes 3rd, but with a significant PR and possible CR. Of course, if Monson runs low 8:20’s that won’t let Tuohy be much of a factor at the end but if the winner goes high 8:30’s it will yield a close race. Let’s face it, Monson is running as a tune up for more elite competition so low 8:20’s is not very likely.

Last year everyone got dropped by a large amount. Laura Galvan was the closest, but she ended up in no man's land around 8:42. Tuohy may end up having to do the same for 3rd if she wants to try for the record. The main chase pack ran around 8:50.

Who can go for 8:30 now? Looks to me like only Cranny and Monson.

I agree with latch to Henes, if they can go 2:55, 2:55 to get to 2k in 5:50, Touhy can try the long close off of that and she'll probably be in a group of 5-7 still battling for 3rd.

Thanks for this…that the majority where in the 8:50’s doesn’t surprise me. Tuohy is clearly targeting sub-8:50 so I hope she can get to a CR or close to it.

I think the "also rans' are faster this year so 8:40-8:45 pace for them would not surprise me.

Keep in mind 8:50-8:55 still a lock indoor qualifier.

Anything under 8:50 new pb and top all-time run.

Btw if Elly is living in Flagstaff the NCSt runners should use her place as an altitude camp before the NCAAs.

They need to do something like that. It is one thing to be competing against altitude trained runners at sea level. It is another to go up to high altitude to run a championship.

a few days cant hurt. One time I drove into Yosemite having stayed in Fresno (which is just over sea level). Parked and hiked up Yosemite Falls which starts at 4000 ft and ends up at almost 7000 ft. It should not have been as hard as it was.

One time I spent a week at sea level on an island, flew back to the mainland, landed, got in a taxi and went to a place at 13,000 feet altitude the same day. Had a bit of a headache, but that was it.

What a load of manure! What qualifies you to assess her level of intelligence?

Big fish in a small pond? The team won back to back championships! She's a college student in the NCAA on a winning team.

Few high school girls that were outstanding athletes have been as successful in college. Like Astro said, in this she is an anomoly. She has two individual titles and two team titles and she's only a junior - and that's coming off an injury after high school.

She broke the NCAA mile record after not competing in that distance for three years! She was .7 seconds behind the pro who won.

While she was recovering and building back after her injuries, her popularity never waned. It must have been difficult for her to be patient during that period, but with the help of her coach and teammates it finally is paying off.

This is one of the greatest athletes ever and we're seeing her in real time. That's pretty cool! And she's got a good head. She makes the deans list on a regular basis. Her own choices put her in the situation she wanted to be in with her coach and teammates. I can't see any college athlete who can ask for more.

Yikes. Sounds like some people are already preparing their excuses in advance just in case. If you want to train at altitude go to Colorado, BYU, NAU, Utah, New Mexico, or any of the other high altitude schools. I don't hear Stanford, Washington, Oregon, Florida, Alabama, Oklahoma State, or anyone else complaining.
