It's Mack's job to comment on the sport, but he made his point so badly. To be outside the box with different perspective can be interesting, but to not be able to express himself better than he did, is unprofessional and weak. If you want to think like a "maverick", you'd better have substance behind you. It's your job to communicate. A little professional respect for the people you're talking about is required.
This wasn't about the sport, it was about getting into the runner's head without regard. Very uncool. Congrats to the teammates for standing up for her.
Each victory has involved different competitors from the Wolfpack. This is an amazing team that has a large pool of talent to step up at a given moment. Go Pack!
You are only as good as your 5th runner, that's basically what he is saying and that concept in xc is as basic as it comes. If NC State or anybody else doesn't like it, tough.

That’s not at all the point he was making.
Of course it was. He was saying she will be the 5th runner for NC state. As the 5th runner it is up to her to win. If she beats the 5th runner from other contenders they win, if she lets them beat her they lose. He isn't wrong.

not even close dimwit. Just look at Nuttycombe where the NC St 5th runner got beat by the 5th runner for NM and how did that turn out? Or ACC where the NC St 5th runner got beat by the 5th of ND. There is a reason they count the places of the top 5 for each team.
Obviously NC State expects to lose and doesn't want the burden on her shoulders. Imagine if he had said it about Sahlman and NAU. Wait. He has said that What a meany.
If NC State's 1 and 2 run 5 seconds slower, no change in team score. But if only their 5th runs 5 seconds slower, they lose 11 points. This is magnified at nationals. Tuohy will likely be in a range of points of 1-5 while their 5th will be in a range of 25 to 150 points.

and of course no runners on any other top team can possibly go plus or minus 5 seconds from their expected time.....of course not. 150 for NC St's 5th? Want to put some money on that? They will get someone in 30th-50th. Who, I wish I knew.
Rauber’s comment is children and weird - Seymour is a 5th year senior not a hs kid. And it’s his job to create content, analyze and predict. So it’s no obsession it’s creating content - they can be offended by his opinion - or like normal top athletes and pros - they could just ignore it and talk on the team about how stupid it was. you are the top team in the ncaa - people talk about you!
I agree that their 5th won't be 150th but the runner being discussed has a large uncertainty. If she runs the way she did early this year, NC State wins. If she does not, NC State loses. PRetty much what Mack said. Spot on. Bet you on that.

same as osu and unm
what you should also take note is that UNM pretty much returned all their runners, but NC State lost 4 of their 7 + 1 alternate is rumored to be injured.
what gordon dont want everyone to realize is HOW HE HYPED NC STATE FROM WINNING THE TITLE when he learned seymour was transferring but when he realized that NC State women lost 2 scorers to injuries, he had to save his "take" so he makes Sydney Seymour as the scapegoat for his championship take ... that way if NV State loses or wins, HE CAN SAY "I WAS RIGHT"
his favorite words are "I'm right. I'm always right"
