You chose 1 video where fans are supporting Simmons. There are many with fans booing him, demanding his trade, and even burning his jersey. I dont think Simone owes nobody nothing either but professional sportsmen have and will continue to be roasted for the way they handle pressure (whether its Simmons, kevin Love)

Agree this is pathetic. She quit on her country and her teammates. There is not an athlete in history that has not been stressed about their sport. The level of victimhood in the US is overwhelming. Japan if you are smart you will exile Osaka to us before she brings the disease to your country.

Boomers failed to deliver a stable nation in all 3 wars. They went in, blew stuff up, threw away some American lives, and left the place no better than they found it.

In explaining her quitting, Biles states "I have to focus on my mental health."

She had a couple bad performances and isn't well equipped, mentally, to deal with it. Like Suzy Favor (Hamilton) diving (feigning a health/injury problem) rather than accept a loss.

For Biles, it may be more than just being mentally unprepared to accept a low placing. Advice from her support crew may be performing damage control her current/future image and marketability.

If you can't stoke sponsors with fresh medals, retaining them seems more likely heading home with a sympathy-inducing withdrawal - as opposed to embarrassing defeats.

I doubt this is a true mental health issue and that is just a cover story for media relations. Probably what really happened is someone on the team pissed her off and having an ego decided the best punishment would be to effectively strip them of a gold medal. She has won everything and is leagues passed everyone else - i doubt she feels any pressure at all. We'll see if she comes roaring back in individual events

She’s the greatest ever at her sport and still is the best active female gymnast. She didn’t just up and quit because of pressure that’s ridiculous.

Yeah , no kidding everyone should dismiss her as weak and forget about all of her accomplishments. Just like everyone did to Ovett for dropping out of the 1500 at the LA Olympics, or Geb for dropping out of the London marathon. Throw her on the trash heap with those bums right?

If only all her teammates had been THIS brave! They all should have quit and that would be the most bravest thing of all time!!!!!!

My guess is that every single person on the board has given up in some race. Everyone can get broken mentally. Sometimes they runner steps off the track, sometimes the runner just fades. This happens at all levels. Jim Ryun stepping off the track against Marty Liquori. Steve Holman fading in the Olympic Trials. Mary Decker crying and Zola Budd fading--both out of it mentally. Ron Clarke never winning at the Olympics. And hundreds of times when some favorite runs an inexplicable bad race.

I don't think she feels good about what she did. I don't think she feels she is hero. I bet she feels bad and will come back on Thursday and win everything. I hope so. Getting up after you fall, putting yourself together after you break is a great accomplishment.

All this said, the abuse she suffered from Nassar is a wildcard in all this. If she is thinking about that, it might be impossible for her to come back mentally. Competing for US Gymnastics after what he did and what they covered up might be a really tough proposition. Like asking some kid to win the state championship for a school where a teacher molested him. Like telling Frank Shorter he should win a race to support his abusive father.
