I've thought her goal was overly ambitious from the beginning, distance running is one of the only sports where the elites are getting shorter, and when you see videos of Gwen running w/ her BTC teammates her leg length is only marginally longer (she's got a very long torso). Oly distance tri is so much more forgiving - you can be decent in the three disciplines and rack up big wins. You can also race every month if something doesn't go your way. She had so much success very early on in triathlon, she isn't very accustomed to being patient or being the underdog. And marathoning requires an insane amount of patience. She didn't seem to taper much and was doing a lot of cross-training and weights even during the last week.
I appreciate having big goals, but she went a touch too far w/ Oly Gold in the marathon.
Here's a optimistic way to look at it:
The marathon is a cruel mistress, and there are many things that can go wrong.
Even Bekele, the greatest distance runner in history, has been plagued with difficulties in the marathon--but remember, he finally got the dice to roll well and put together a 2:03:03 run.
So there's always hope.
For all the people who say we are sexist for not like Gwen, ask yourself: How much does Kipchoge talk? Rupp? Mo? Hastings? Flanagan? Huddle? People who have proven themselves in the sport time and time again. Yeah they set lofty goals, but they show that those goals are reasonable. Very realistic and obtainable with the right training. Most of those people just talk about having good training and staying injury free. They show a bit more humility.

I think you have to either fuel for health or fuel for performance. To me, it seems like she is skimping on the calories in a foolhardy attempt to lose weight, thinking that the extra weight loss will help her shave off some time given her lack of running abilities.

If she was sick leading up to this race then nobody can say for sure what she's capable of.
120mpw for someone that was recently a triathlete sounds pretty absurd. She was likely sick and overtrained. All things considered maybe not a bad performance at all.

What elite triathlete has ever had success in a single discipline .I know there are some pro-bikers that converted to tris late in their career, and Alan Webb [back, baby?] as a runner, and of course. Andy Potts had collegiate [not elite] swimming success, eg we've never had an elite person be elite in a single discipline AND elite in triathlon. Vice versa is also true.
Why should this be any different? Clearly tris are becoming more competitive and single-sport highly competitive individuals [sub-elite/top collegiates] do join and find success.
Why is that? I dont know, but triathletes are terrible at everything. But just good enough at everything overall to beat anyone else that tries to cross over. I don't think anyone is afraid of Kipchoge in the pool, for instance. [no shame in that, but somebody like a sub-elite Andy Starykowicz would probably accidentally drown him, and no Kenyan would ever match his power output/wind profile on the bike, and good luck running him down being like 40 minutes down on the run at that point]
Vacation, must have, now and regular cycle also.
Longer buildup. All of history’s champions have long running careers pursuing different competitions. She must have time to engage the gears, this comes from a few seasons of running at least.

- Take some time off, get properly well. Rest and relaxation.
- Build up training properly
- Look into areas that were lacking and focus on those
- Race again in however many months time.
I don't think one race is the be all and end all, especially if she was unwell. However, it's obviously going to knock her.

Leave the distractions of social media, kid, husband, cars, complex meals, therapy, sponsors, videos, etc. all behind.
Live in a shack. Chase 50 other people that are faster than you in workouts. Run on dusty dirt roads dodging cow pies and ruts. Simplify life. Run, eat, sleep, run. Drink water and eat ugali. Sit and think. Cook your own food and clean your own pot. Be humble.
Forget about trying to directly transfer Tri success to running success. Develop the inner fire, confidence and hunger to succeed as a runner.

It is a pretty big let down to run a marathon time that has about a two mile gap between her and the top three at the US trials. But I think the competitor in her will kick in and she will be back at it in the marathon.
So, I would say just keep at it and see what happens. She is 32. At that age, she is far more likely to develop into a good marathoner than to be able to keep up on the track with the 20+ year olds coming out of the NCAAs. Shalane was a boss on the track, but could not do it like she used to when she was in her early 30s.
Also, I think she has greatly underestimated the amount of acclimation her body needs to be competitive in the marathon. She only did Oly distance tris. Each time you run a 20+ miler, you body gets better at the distance. Some runners can just nail the marathon the first time out. Others need a few stinkers to build up their ability. Desi ran 2:45 and 2:37 before she really started to run 2:2X consistently.

If Gwen is going to win Oly Gold she must have 2,20 capacity. Bekele started his marathon career with a 2,05 race. Gwen didn´t run 2,22.

Bekele won his debut marathon in 2:05:04, setting a course record. He's a really bad example, as his marathon debut was one of the best in history.
However, at that time, Bekele had many years of high mileage training - Jorgensen has not. It's very possible that she will still improve substantially with another year of training, but it's also possible that she won't. She seems determined to find that out, however, and why wouldn't she?

Even golf doesn't buck that trend. As you can see from this chart, their prime ends around 33, and then it's all downhill from there. Tiger, Watson, and others never won anything of note after age 35. They can still be good for a long time, but every day past 33 the body is going in the wrong direction.
