What Gjert does well with her after her first national race is to say that Henrik never won that competition and wasn't any good until his late teens. When the kid's just 11 or 12, you have no business making pronouncements about their future capacities.

I just saw the penultimate 2018 episode. 5:11 for 1500 for a 12 year old girl is nothing to worry about. That's a solid time, about a 5:32 mile. If she drops just 50 seconds in six years, she's already close to the level of the long-time American hs record for the mile (Patti Sue Plumer's 4:36) and my bet is that she'll already be under 5:00 for the mile by 14. I ran 5:32 for the mile in 8th grade and it was not a bad time for my conference (some guys were breaking 5 already, but plenty were slower than me). Gjert needs to back down on the tension there because it looks too much like the portrait of crazy father-coach who makes his daughter burn out early. It was interesting to see that Filip was able to come back from a partially torn plantar fascia from a Stanford meet to run 3:30.01 later in the season. You could see as well that Jakob was already a beast in practice. Still, it's remarkable that he was able to drop from 3:39 at Stanford, a pr, to 3:31 in the same season, a real credit to his ability and Gjert's coaching.
You can also see that one of the keys to the three brothers doing so well under his coaching is that while they do most of what he says, they have a sense of humor about all of it and don't take things too seriously.
Some interesting dynamics in the final episode. Gjert really lays into Henrik when the latter throws down a 40.0 300 rep after Gjert had just chastised them for going too fast at 41.x. Gjert characteristically exaggerates and makes it out like Henrik had just flushed all his season's work down the toilet, and Henrik comes just short of telling him to F*** off.
Henrik goes on to have his best races of the season by far.
Ingrid and Jacob see these dynamics and are all the better prepared mentally for adversity. Gjert is a huge worry-wart and puts himself in authority, but has a huge heart and it helps the kids really bond with him and each other. He puts out a demand or statement but allows himself to be persuaded and relent. The kids learn that they have to make their case and stick to their guns if they really want something. This is especially evident with restrictions with girlfriends, etc..
It's a very different dynamic than I have seen in coaching, and very eye-opening on an interpersonal level.
I’m a huge fan of Gjert. Would get his autograph before the boys. Would personally thank him as he’s making Europe relevant again with his high standards and literally doing something that’s never been done before.

Yeah, agreed. Those were definitely two different Beregas. Something is definitely rotten there.
I find it interesting how they keep talking about how the Ingebrigtsen's a very un-Norwegian.
I think it's because Norwegians usually have a very hands-off parenting approach, whereas the Ingebrigtsen patriarch is like a military drill sergeant.
The documentary also says that they break Norway's egalitarian culture by wanting to be the best.
Does anyone know what kind of device do they use to test their lactate levels?

The way they show the 5000m at the European Championships is really great. Usually they use the races as action sequences and they try to build suspense, but here, they used it to let the Ingebrigtsens reflect on the extreme choices they've made, the sacrifices they've made and what motivated them to make these decisions. All the while they show images of Jakob and Henrik dominating the field. A life's work coming to fruition in less than 15 minutes.
