I didn't actually put my PRs on my resume, but I did put on my resume that I ran XC and track in college. Then I was asked what my PRs were and for some reason--I don't know I wanted to look cool--I lied and said I ran 15:43 for 5K in college. My actual PR was 16:55 and the 15:43 time was from a road race that was billed as a 5K but was very short. So if they were to look me up, they could find a result that said 15:43, but it's not genuine. Anyway, I got the job and that was that. No big deal. That is until yesterday, when my boss--who originally asked me about my PRs in the interview--called me into his office and told me about the corporate 5K challenge scheduled for mid-July. They want me on the team. It is a 5K road race with XC scoring. The race is a point of pride for the 10 or so companies that compete, and our company has finished first or second every year it has been in existence. We should be able to win this year, but here is the thing; my boss told me about this "ringer" our main rival has--a guy who wins every year while running 17-17:20 type times. My boss said flat out that they expect me to win, which will be an extra point of pride. I ran a 5K earlier in the spring and went 18:04. Not in the best shape of my life, and even when I was, 17:00 on a true 5K road course was probably out of my reach. I need a training plan to whip myself into shape over the next 6 weeks. If I don't win, I at least need to finish respectably as to avoid total embarrassment and shame. But realistically, a true 15:40 5Ker should be able to take out a 17:00 road racer, so I really need to win this thing. With this race, I can either look like an utter fool or a hero. I'm thinking about jumping my mileage to ~75 a week and doing two speed workouts a week. I would appreciate suggestions for how I should train for this. My current training has simply been 35 miles of easy running a week. Thanks in advance.
