It's very applicable. In 1912, the 5000m WR was 14:36 and marathon world record was 2:40:34. Even by 1950, the 5000m WR was 13:58 and marathon WR was 2:25:39. For the entire first half of the 20th century, there wasn't a single remotely world class marathoner by your standards. So I'll ask again, what do you think of those guys who were running?

First of all, by what I said yes the 1912 World best in the marathon was soft (it was set on an indoor track). Perhaps not the best runners were running marathon back then.

I notice you are being crafty with your dates too.

The 1947 record (still the WR in 1950) was set by Suh Yun-bok (who was 23 at the time, not nearing 40) who won the Boston marathon and the 1936 Olympic marathon.

Call me when John Olsen wins either race...

Geb 35+ when he last set marathon WR.

Seems reasonable an even longer race could have someone slightly older set the WR.

My guess is that Mr. Froggy can't even run under 18 flat for a 5k.

Btw most 5kers on up just run to finish and get their medal.

Correction. My 5k time PR is 17:46. I think it's a pretty good time considering I'm 5 foot 3 and weigh 210 lbs.

And anyone who can win those things should absolutely go win them! But for the rest of us who won't be winning any six-figure prize purses any time soon, a couple grand is nice take-home for an easy days' work against such soft competition. You're not going to get those kinds of prizes in a 5K, and if you do, your competition will be much harder (according to some people in this thread.)

I'd bet he'd actually do well at Rocky Raccoon (I've done RR100.) The TNF course is much different, and I don't know how he'd do there.

I never said it would, and I would love it if more people went out and tried. Clearly many people in this thread can do it, and I encourage every one of you to go take his record.

When I see you running against Kipsang or Gebrselassie and doing well, you might have a point. And if you do, congrats on those big prizes. If not, well, you left $5000 on the table, which might be "small cash" to you but I'm not spitting on it.
