The Canadian Running Thread

I think there is still a lot of positive potential in this thread, for those who may want to chat about the training/racing zones, within the range of events that are longer than 1500 metres. Of course, if you are a Canadian, you can't actually talk about that, because Athletics Canada's official position is that there are no events longer than 1500 metres. None worthy of any caring or support from our National Sport Governing Body...

I was not relieved of my duties at all --- I CHOSE to resign from my duties, for PERSONAL and PRIVATE reasons, and that is how the record stands... Nothing alleged against me was ever brought to any standard of justice or reckoning, and never will be...

I can assure you, and my friends and colleagues will support me on this, if I thought that Athletics Canada was doing the right thing for our distance runners, I would gracefully limp off, exit stage left. But they are not, and so I won't...

The one on the left speaks for itself (volumes!).

The one on the right was taken when a photographer showed up to our practice to take some photos for a newspaper article. We were doing our warm up jog and our coach (Skuj) kept moving to the front so as to be shown prominently in the photos. I left the group shortly after this incident.

It seems that someone has given me both the motivation and the opportunity to discuss the personal lives of all the great Canadian distance runners and their coaches, from the 1980's and 1990's. Not just Canadians, all the great International runners they hooked up with on the European Circuit. Hmmm....where should I start?

I believe I will begin with AG/SR and WG/AC...

I admire the leadership role Ron is clearly taking in this era of "key events (1500m and below)" and "sprint/throw nation". That's what this thread needs to be about, and FVCK YOU "WG" for pretending to be he. He can speak for himself.

Mr Gardiner should say something to clear this (sprint-throws nation) up. Surely he is aware of the ruckus since those comments?

Whatever happened to Marc Olesen anyway - think he was a Stanford guy, but never heard of any post-secondary accomplishments?

that's because he aren't very good (read: other than SB, awful) at events longer than 1500...but we pretty good at the hurdles, decently deep at the sprints and not bad, plus have a lot of young potential, at the 800 and 1500. makes sense to have AC to want to put money in those events to me. you were probably one of the people who bitched no end when AC didn't want to waste money to send a team to come 15th at World X weren't you?

And for anyone who wants to know how gutless and heartless My Tormenter is, we recently adopted a child, then on day 21, the birthmom changed her mind, as is her legal right. On the cvrr forum we described this difficulty. My Tormenter thinks it's "ok" to say things like that.

Well what exactly do you think is challenging us? As far I can tell everyone who bitches and moans about AC seem to think only distance runners should be taken care of.

What has USATF done for Solinsky that AC hasn't or won't do for Bairu? How much as he got from their equivalent of carding money?

Both of them have done just what many have advocated - get a bunch of good runners together, get a good coach, get some private funding, and run like hell.

It's got nothing to do with the governing body, so maybe instead of bitching about being held back by 'the man', those coaches and athletes who truly care about the sport should do something productive.

So really, who is it that is surrendering and saying 'we can't do this if these are the AC/Sport Canada policies'?

Oh Man, I don't even know where to begin. But in the last month, AC has stated, clearly, that they won't "focus" on distances beyond 1500m, and, Mr Gardiner made his Big Boo Boo (and I'll apologise for that if he publicy states that he was misquoted). Seems to me that those two things go hand in hand though. And those things represent the raising of the white flag, in a rich country, where distance running really is quite popular when compared to those other events. And we have a deep history in this area, which some people care about. AC has obviously demonstrated that they don't care about history - only the trend of the month. This is short sighted thinking, and a guaranteed path to nowhereville.

We could also talk ad nauseum about funding for WXC and junior development, but others will respond to your post I'm sure.
