No, he didn't train seriously. He studied seriously for a medical degree. Running was his recreation. There was none of the knowledge that athletes later acquired as professionals. But you see no difference between amateurs in the past and professional sport. Gee - I wonder how athletes today are so much faster? I think you've just shown who is the dumbest person in the room.

I have'nt posted in awhile as I find it interesting in how you keep the "discussion" going with all sorts of "stuff". So a little challenge Sir. About 20 years ago on this forum there was some interesting discussion about Arthur Lydiard and his philosophy of Coaching versus some others ( Various forums !!) .. It dragged on for some years .. some REALLY interesting people on there both in a positive as well negative modes ... In basketball or football where a professional can get a multi year seven figure deal but in a sport like running where professionals don't get anywhere near the money a basketball or football player gets I'm not sure there's much difference. He just got a Nike NIL deal. Why would they give him more money to be a full on pro? You could argue that as a runner at Nike sponsored US school Nike will get more exposure from the deal than they would if he's a full on pro. That said, he may or may not want to go to school or to do it here.

What Ruthe makes from his NIL right now I think is pretty good for a 16 year old in NZ. I think most importantly it keeps his options open. Let's say his rapid progress drops off slightly in the next 2-3 years which would be completely normal and wouldn't mean anything is wrong - it's just what can happen. Having the NCAA to go to is such a great option and you aren't locked into a deal that could easily be ended at the end of an Olympic cycle and could stop you from doing something in the future.
I think you'll see Sam Ruthe in the collegiate system, that's my gut feeling.

I can assure you that's not the case. You'll have to trust me on that one - in terms of base salary right now it's Ramsden by a margin. I understand it's hard to comprehend if you are used to the NCAA system and hearing about what numbers kids might make, but it doesn't work like this in other geographic regions of the world (like Australasia). That's all I can say.

This is very much in line with my thinking. On top of this I think back to when Alan Webb and Nick Willis went to the U. of Michigan. Webb dropped out to turn pro and Willis stayed at Michigan. Webb ran some really good times but never really won or placed all that well at much of anything big but Willis went on to win some big games medals. This is my own bias perhaps but I've thought a reason he did that and Webb didn't was that staying in college taught Willis to race while Webb went on to run great times in what were really time trials and never got good at racing. Again, that may just be my bias.

I expect that the NIL deal with Nike means he'll need to go to a Nike school. Wisconsin is an Under Armor school but I'm not sure their cross country and track teams are required to run in UA so maybe Wisconsin could work. But I'd bet he'll be at a Nike school if he comes here for college.

I think you are forgetting that Maia has a Harvard degree which when all the running is done she has that which is of significant value. A university degree can not be underestimated in the long term value. I hope Ruthe goes to US for the experience. At the moment staying in New Zealand gives him few opportunities to race unless he is travelling every other week to Australia for races.
