A former high school friend of mine scoffed at climate change, still supports Trump, drives a gas-guzzler, and recently moved to Florida’s west coast. It’s hard for me to generate much compassion when he’s dismissed my attempts to educate him at every step. I hope he at least heeds the evacuation orders.
The US has cut carbon emissions a TON since 2000. But global emissions have increased. Why should the US sacrifice standards of living while other countries produce MUCH more?
Also, go look at John Kerry - a noted climate change activist - flying on his private jet and releasing a ton of carbon there. The people who shill the most for carbon neutrality are complete hypocrites.
Fair question.
The US has created far more carbon emissions historically than China and India, but yes, the US has been reducing theirs in recent years while theirs has increased. But the US still produces significantly more on a per capita basis than does China and India.
NOAA Climate.gov - " Does it matter how much the United States reduces its carbon dioxide emissions if China doesn’t do the same?" wrote:
In 1973, U.S. per capita carbon dioxide emissions were 20 times those of China’s and 66 times those of India’s. By the year 2000, when many U.S. policymakers and consumers were aware of the effects of greenhouse gas emissions, U.S. per person emissions had dropped to just over 21 metric tons per year, while China’s and India’s had risen to 2.9 and 0.9 respectively. That meant U.S. per person emissions were seven times those of China’s and 23 times those of India’s. Since then, the United States' per person emission rate has continued to drop, but the country's 2021 per person carbon dioxide emissions were still nearly twice as large as China's and nearly 8 times as large as India's. (Explore these and other comparisons through the interactive charts and maps at the excellent Our World in Data: CO2 emissions site.)
China has overtaken the U.S. as the largest annual emitter, but all countries have to reduce their emissions if we want to stop further global warming. Every fraction of a degree of warming we avoid lowers the risks to people...
Also, there is the fact that a great deal of the emissions produced in China is for products made for exporting to the US consumers. From the same article:
"Much of China’s rising emissions are related to manufacturing, with many of the resulting products increasingly purchased by American consumers. The United States imported $450.4 billion worth of goods from China in 2020 alone, according to the Office of the United States Trade Representative."
People who are lucky will get FEMA trailers to live in while their homes are rebuilt. But a large number of people will lose everything and end up selling their property for lot value or less. I think a lot of the older homes on the barrier islands/keys are just going to get scraped of their foundation if there are no big hotels between them and the beach. Others will be flooded out but could be saved if people get back in and pull all the wet drywall and flooring to allow the studs to dry out. At least the weather will be cooling off and staying dry after the storm. If this was an August storm, people would come back to temps in the mid 90s.
This is like two major hurricanes in 2 weeks. Florida is a great place but who is going to want to invest in a house or condo after these disasters.
Hopefully the impending financial crisis down there doesn't drag down the rest of the US economy. This is a very sad situation
I'm in S Manatee Co, about 2 mies north of the airport. Looks like it's coming this way. Boarded up some windows and have some sand bags in front of the garage. Got some rum as well so I guess we are set. Wish us luck.
i will say this. CNN and the weather channel should be forbidden from using their infrared satellite radar loop.. This is the one they show continuously on a loop that is fire red and looks like Armageddon and hellfire is going to be unleashed on hundreds of miles leaving mass death and destruction. They do this for click bait.
That radar shot is a joke. It causes friends and family from all over the country to call me and plead with me to escape the doom and impending destruction.
Just look at the precipitation radar and you can see it’s not that big of a deal.
Winds are down to 125 mph sustained as the storm starts to interact with the coastline and draws in dry air from the north. That makes Milton a strong cat 3 on landfall. While there will be plenty of wind damage, there is a big difference between a storm with 125 mph winds and 140+. And winds will continue to diminish as the storm comes onshore.
Storm surge is what is going to be interesting. The storm is still about 12 hours from landfall and signs of the surge are just starting. I am seeing some beaches covered up with surf on the news. But nothing too big so far.

What an idiotic post. Massive life-threatening storm about to hit populated areas in the US, and you think the media should tone down the reporting. GTFOOH.

I did not make my point well. I should Not have said not a bid deal. Hurricanes are a big deal indeed.
My point is that there is a big difference between Florida local coverage of hurricanes which has excellent meteorologists and the rating chasing CNN and the weather channel. And that fire red infrared satellite radar unnecessarily puts fear into people.
Current predictions are Milton will hit Sarasota tonight as a cat 4.
Someone earlier said that Ron is threatening to prosecute the media if they air or publish a pro-choice ad. He thought that would be enough to appease God. Clearly it was not enough. I don’t know what he tried to do overnight, but whatever it was. It failed.
Here are a few suggestions (he has 9 hours for this thing to get to Cat 3).
1) Finding 10 righteous people in the State of Florida. Abraham already did the pre negotiation for him, so he does not even have to find 50. However, he only has 6 hours left, so he may not have the time.
2) Make same sex marriage illegal in Florida
3) Outlaw buggery
4) Make women dressing as men and men dressing as women illegal in Florida
5) Make abortion illegal in Florida
6) Have a stronger stance on corruption and wickedness. This may be too general, but he could find something concrete to tackle that. This was a big deal for God before the “big flood”.
7) Make Taylor Swift illegal in Florida. God does not like idols.
8) Take concrete actions to reduce violence and bloodshed in Florida. Maybe he should take a stronger stance on that (like in El Salvador for example). I heard that violence has increased dramatically in Florida in the past 4 years.
These are only a few ideas.
Time is running out
Thank you Ron. it’s now a category 3. I guess that he proved his willingness to make Florida a good place.

The local channels are saying the same things. Even Jane Castor has said don't go outside or you'll die. I don't know what you're smoking but you sound extra crazy.
Any problems with disaster relief funding start a little closer to home than Ukraine.
"Republican Representative Anna Paulina Luna demanded more FEMA funding for Florida, just weeks after she voted against a bill that provided $20 billion for federal emergency funds."
