Lithium is not an explosive. It gets hot and expands, the casing in which is it's housed then bursts. Much like you'd say a balloon pops, but it doesn't technically explode. There's no chemical reaction involved. We wouldn't all be carrying an explosive devices with us as well. So Roy here is wrong, it takes/took more than just a virus to get these devices to cause the flesh damage they did.

Meaning, the devices must have had additional hardware installed. And that could have only been done at a scale this large prior to each of them obtaining the pager. So we're talking months of planning and infiltrating suppliers for each of them to get one of these "hot" pagers. And for all of that to not get detected that the pagers were tampered with is wild. Mossad is patient and pretty much the best in the world at this, but even for them this is incredible.

Yes, Israel had no good current motive to blow them up. It’s not like this was retaliation for anything specific Hezbollah did. They realized that the information about their ability to launch this attack had leaked to Hezbollah, so they decided to just use it immediately than to lay all the effort to waste. What I also heard on independent news is that Israel even assassinated a Hezbollah operative that came to know of this capability but still didn’t think it could keep it covert anymore.

In practice, nobody knows what this means, but it has long been standard practice to use 50 or 100 kg ordinance to take out an individual target. The “reasonable military commander,” to use the language of the ICTY, would do it, so it’s generally legal. Perhaps not legal “irrespective of civilian casualties,” because there might be unusual circumstances, but at least generally.
