Not a sound reason. Walk-ons are members of the team. Coaches have to cater to the needs of all members of a team. Do not take a job unless you are able to meet the needs of all members of your team. Again, as an employee of higher education, this is part of your job description.
Are you implying that a coach at Duke shouldn't be able/expected to cater to all levels of student-athlete on their team? Or do you believe that lifelong well-being can be achieved through neglecting specific needs of individual student-athletes?
Do not join a team if you refuse to follow all of that team's rules.
Coach shouldn't spend 8x as much time dealing with a drunk, deranged walk-on than she is spending with her All American athletes.
If you aren't running fast, you have a bad attitude, and you are so needy that your teammates can't get the attention they need, then why exactly are you on the team again?
Having a rich dad paying full tuition doesn't entitle you to a spot on the team.
1) Agreed. Obviously, this also goes for coaches too.
2) Agreed. They shouldn't have to in an ideal world. However, some athletes require more time/effort than others.
3) Agreed, if your sentiment is that such an athlete should not be on the team (mostly for the latter two reasons). However, would all the signees agree with the premises that you use to frame this question?
4) Agreed.
Glad we're on the same page! What was your point exactly?

Coaches don’t have to “cater” to any athlete wtf world you living in. Respect and coach them fairly yes, treat them equally and cater to them no
Catering in this context actually means not treating them equally! It would mean being adjustable to different athletes. That sounds like respecting and coaching fairly to me, doesn't it? No need to apologize, hope things are cleared up!
Duke isn’t technically a religious school anymore. It was founded by Baptists. There’s a chapel. But no religion requirement or any real religion being pushed.

As I read these stories and posts, does anyone recall how difficult life was for college students in 2020 and 2021? I don’t know what they were doing at Duke but most of these schools had very tight restrictions on gatherings, had on-line classes, etc. It was difficult to be a student and/or student/athlete.

You don't think the coach devotes more time and energy to the stars than a random walk on?
It's the same in life - high performers get more attention and more leeway
Im sorry but if your an athlete you should not be drinking especially for while running at one of the best running colleges in America. Imagine how many athletes there are out there working their ass off to try and even make a college team and some people who host party's while going to one of the best running colleges in the country go and get wasted and make someone medication end up in hospitals. Its not the coaches fault for not wanting to give them a 5th year. If I was in their position I would be doing everything I can to make sure that I am bettering myself as a runner not trying to destory all the hard work that I have put in over the last 4 years at college just to get drunk. ESPECIALLY THE NIGHT BEFORE A RACE>
I was on the team and would say it was quite the opposite. The ‘24 men were all great guys that everyone loved. The house party they “hosted” was an annual track-wide team party that moreso happened to be at their house. One person got transported because of drinking on meds and Duke admin was notified and the coaches had to put the heat on someone, so it was the guys house even though they did nothing but generously provide the venue for an event that has occurred annually on the track team for 10+ years.
This^
A 100+ person annual event goes on and they're supposed to watch over every single person? Sure it's not completely innocent but I would put most blame on the person who was transported as well as their close friends. Different event group, different gender, multiple years younger, I don't think the senior xc guys hold full accountability on 1 person who took it too far. For the record, the event was less so a party and more a 'homecoming'-esque get together primarily consisted of a slideshow for the new comers. Alcohol was just on the side and a single person had too much while 50% of the crowd were sober Sallys.
For all you talking down on those guys, it's clear you have never met them. They are great people and loved by the whole team, who unanimously agrees they unfairly had to take the bullet. As for missing out on Nuttycombe (and thus "not being able to qualify for nationals"- likely wouldn't have anyway), I don't think that was nearly as evil as taking back scholarships.
2 of the guys literally lost their 5th year scholarship (like 100k!) over this bs. That's a life changing punishment for something as redundant as hosting some annual event (which they were reluctant to do, and pressured because the track team had no other option). Every single person on the team disagreed with their scholarships being revoked, other than Wilbourn who could use it on some precious pre-developed grad transfers that could bring them ACC points to finish in the top 10 next year (since he can't develop them himself). In fact, it's highly speculated that it was all part of the coach's plan to get back scholarship money and were looking for an excuse. Don't listen to these guys saying otherwise, they clearly had no relation to the team (or are maybe the coach's themselves- I know they are LR frequenters).
You’re hosting a party so yes it is on you to be aware of any incidents or like not allowing it balloon to 100+ people. Where you can’t control something getting out of hand. Of course you think your idiot friends are great if they supply you with a place to party.

Yes, I was going to say that I think it’s a Methodist and Quaker affiliation. My uncle went there for seminary and he’s Methodist.
I dont really care about the party or the drinking, it's the failure to take responsibility for it that's the problem.
I drank in college. I went to parties. I also knew that when I was under age if we were caught, we'd be in big trouble. I knew that the LAST excuse I could EVER use for a bad practice was that I was out too late the night before.
You dont call mommy and daddy and complain that the coach is mean to you and get them fired.
Yeah sorry it’s Methodist you’re right. Typed it late night. But outside there being a Chapel and maybe some sort of convocation at orientation and graduation, you don’t need to see any religion. No forced church attendance, no religion requirement, etc.
One of the topics I did not see any discussion about is if the police got involved. Based on some of the past cases with sorority students taken to the hospital that were underage, I understand that the hospital must inform the police. If that student was underage they would have to go through the legal process. If they get arrested and don't have a lawyer fight it, the arrest could be on their record and affect job and graduate school applications. The Durham police may even investigate who supplied the alcohol. That is probably a more serious crime.
-they didn't like that they fired Riley -some dude who quit sophomore year didn't like that running got in the way of class. Turned to alcohol. Ran a practice hung over and thought Reckhart should have been the one to be his mental health counselor instead of actually going to one.
-they told athletes if they were too sick to practice they probably shouldn't be racing
-they suspended seniors for hosting a massive house party during xc season. Then told them they wouldn't be on the team for the 5th covid year
Sounds like Kevin has a tough task on his hands because that team seems incredibly soft
Bunch of entitled upper middle class white boys without any real live responsibilities.
Huh? This is college. Kids drink whether you like it or not. There are so many more punishments that would accomplish the goal much better without compromising the athletes season. Making them go to extra study hours, alcohol training courses or similar. This was an xc party you really think there were 100s of kids there like Project X? Seems a pretty drastic response to me.

The coach didn't compromise the athletes' seasons, they compromised it by breaking team rules.
These are the life lessons that sports are supposed to teach.
Newbury Park boys team is entered both in the Sweepstakes AND the rated race. Interesting.
Dana Hills has a strong 1-2, but other than that, I’m not sure if they have what it takes to make the sweepstakes race. If they didn’t make the sweepstakes race, Noonan would need to enter there individually to compete there.
Jesuit CA is not entered in either race. Based on the schedule on their Instagram page, they won’t be doing Woodbridge.
What I'm not understanding is how missing Nuttycombe prevented them from making nationals. They likely wouldn't have placed high enough for the committee to consider them for an at-large bid to nationals. Also, the best way to make nationals is by placing high enough at the regional meet to get the automatic qualifying mark.
Such a shame though, because imagine how the at-large selection process would've been if the athletes did get to run and get 35th place as a team with a team score that would've looked like an area code. We truly were robbed of an exceptional opportunity.
This whole situation pretty much sums up 80% of the NCAA and it’s mediocrity.
Watching the Olympics and hearing some of the stories from other countries shows how spoiled and bloated the NCAA system has become. Very few actually want to be good or even care about the sport. Without Universities having teams I doubt the majority of these kids would even hobby jog.
What a position for the coach too, you have the athletic department on one side that will fire you for lack of results and not having control of your team. On the other side you have the athletes that can get you fired with their complaints of holding everyone accountable. Sounds like a small target to hit.
