Hartman's performances are not surprising to me at all. I've been following her since before she ran in high school. I knew she would blossom into an excellent runner. It's too bad that Stephens is out this season. 3 to 5 need to step it up.
If you have a method for figuring out which stars will falter, and which ladies will develop, please let us know.
Who in class of '25 are the merely good runners, who will become college all-americans?
Perhaps I should have just said that her success is not surprising to me. Anyone in Ohio that followed her high school career is probably not surprised by how well she is doing.
It’s like growing a tree. You have to bury a good seed in fertile soil, water it every week, and protect it from pests and storms in order to grow a beautiful tree. Talent matters as much as a seed. If we put a talented runner in the right environment with a good coach, the success is not guaranteed but it should be largely consistent.
That's just the point, it's not consistent.
Bush, Hartman and Gapes all good runners coaches up.
Starliper, Hendrix, Walters, Quarzo1, Rauber, Quarzo2, Hall, Putman, Stevens, even so far Shea and Michalak not working out so well.
If we were sure about someone, all this inconsistency could be avoided in recruiting.
Starliper is at Colorado. Stephens is injured but has done well. She would be right there with Hartman if not injured. Shea & Michalak are still too early in their collegiate careers to say that they’re not working out.
“Some…examples provide some evidence of the $hitshow that is recruiting and projecting high school success to the collegiate ranks. Every program has these types of examples of Gatorade award winners, highly-ranked talent and the like who simply did not pan out in college.”
Absolutely, and for as many different reasons are there are runners.
I am bumping this thread because I was on the TRACK: All-Access YouTube channel and stumbled across the video below. It was a team workout that was filmed on the American Tobacco Trail. It was in October before the Pre-Nats when the team was in a heavy block of training. As most that follow the team know, Hartman went on to crush it in the ACC Championship, wine the SE Regional, and take 5th at the NCAA Championship. Gapes also crushed it at all of those. The 1-2 stick of Hartman & Gapes is as strong as anyone else and they look strong in the video below.
Hartman & Gapes were with Hannah Steelman and the other group had Bethany Michalak, Angelina Napoleon, Kate Putman, Jolena Quarzo, Ellie Shea & Fiona Smith. I suspect that if Leah Stephens were not injured she would have been in the Hartman group.
This thread started with the question of "NC State is losing Tuohy and Chmiel. Anyone have any predictions on how they will do this year?" With Stephens being out and the losses that they incurred, I believe that the team exceeded expectations. The development of Hartman & Gapes points to good & thoughtful coaching. The team is very young. It was already mentioned but with the emergence of Hartman & Gapes as well as the talented group of youngsters that is coming up and the talented group coming in, the team has the potential to be better than any NC State from the past.

On Hartman & Gapes, how amazing was their indoor season!
Hartman a little better, but basically 2 x 4:25/8:50/15:15 kids with roughly 2 years of eligibility left.
I know I'm always chirping about evaluating recruiting classes, and how seldom there really are 'coached up' athletes blah blah, but I am a Pack fan, and man have these 2 been fun to watch!😁
Hartman now seriously a contender to win '25 xc and outdoor 5000, with Gapes right on her heels.
So sure, great outlook next year for xc. Hartman, Gapes, Rauber, healthy Stephens and anybody, please anybody, among other team members, and next group of freshmen to fill out 5-7 and they can contend again.

They'll be fine and have no problems filling in those 5-7 spots. Is Fiona Smith out of eligibility? I believe so but am not 100% sure.
In watching the video and seeing other NC events and social media posts, it seems like Hartman really has a good time and enjoys what she is doing. It's refreshing to see. She seems like she is really well-adjusted. Having the right mindset when competing at a high level is huge. I agree that it has been fun watching her development along with Gapes. They're good team leaders and set a good example for the youngers.
Thank you for sharing that. With school, meets, and just starting to figure out life and being away from home, theres a lot of pressure on these young athletes. Hartman is easy to be a fan of. Currently one of my favorite collegiate athletes.
I saw a short video she did with one of her teammates a bit ago. It was sometime after the ACC & regional xc meets. IIRC it was a TikTok video or something where the teammate did a short interview with her. I didn't realize that she came to the sport a bit late, at least by the standards of some of the top runners. I think she said the 8th or 9th grade. She was a tennis player before that time.
What was interesting is that she specifically called this forum out. She commented about how posters here were commenting about how "big" she is. I also seem to recall that she initially found the comments to be hurtful and then just ignored them. I guess the lesson here is that yes, the athletes do read this forum and that perhaps the posters here should be a bit more thoughtful with what they post. Also for the athletes, don't pay much heed to what the keyboard warriors write because they are obviously clueless a lot of the time.
NC State has picked up a transfer - Fleur Templier - from Portland. 8:57 3000. 23 rd at Nuttycombe last year. Did not make it to Nationals but based on her regional performance could likely have finished about 50-55th at Nationals which looks like would have vaulted the team from 8th to 3rd with everyone returning.
There are still other very strong teams out there but this adds depth and experience.

They will also be getting Kaylie Armitage from Furman. Injured right now but should be a contributor.

How are the numbers working out for xc? Are they just being aggressive with cuts to get to 17 or do they believe the ncaa will ultimately phase in roster limits?

Anyone not making the cut will be put on the Track roster, but will be limited to 3 practices per week in the Fall, and obviously, are not able to compete in XC. There will definitely be some unhappy campers.

One would think that a team including 2 top 10 returners, a 50th place returner, a 9:29 steeplechaser, a 15:43 5000, a sub 9:00 3000 and a 4:15 1500 runner might be a title favorite but if OR returns everyone they can, I'd say that is not the case.

Napoleon is having her break through year now too. She just ran a new PR Steeple in 9:29 that you mentioned above…
Real question. Why do top recruits pick NC State? While the program is strong and the coaching top tier, it is still NC State and the university you attend attaches for life. The campus is one of the least aesthetic campuses anywhere. With so many higher academic options out there, that also have top tier coaching, it’s hard to figure out how it is chosen over Notre Dame, Stanford, UNC, UVA etc.
