Yes, in running, you want your strength/weight ratio to be as high as possible. So, it is entirely dependent on the functionality of the extra weight. If it's just fat, then it's hurting her performance. If it's muscle it may not be hurting her performance at all.
Either way, I doubt it's a body composition issue. She ran faster than she did last year. She didn't run a bad race. She just got beat. It happens.

Put on a 15lb weightvest and train for a bit. You'll get to where you can carry the extra weight better than most. That's Tuohy. She's great with it! But, she'll be a better and faster runner without it.
My last post wasn't directed to you. You clearly give much more benefit of the doubt on what this extra weight is, but you haven't lost your mind.
And, yes, you're correct to point out that she ran PHENOMENALLY considering how much more she carried around than last year.
If she comes out showing a baby bump in a couple of months, I won't hold my breath waiting for apologies.
Without addressing the issue of weight, and/or the reason for more weight - Tuohy does
look much more muscular in this photo compared to how she was looking a year ago.

It's the life of a distance runner. I can only speak for myself. In college, I carried an extra 10 to 15 pounds of mostly beer. It for sure made me slower.

I think this weight discussion is a red herring. Take a look at that picture none of those ladies are carrying extra weight.
All that happened was one great runner beat another great runner. They may very well flip positions, the next time they race.
Neither of them is bought into their "rivalry" as much the goofballs that stalk them on this site.

The young lady in third only has 1 leg and a head. This makes her both lighter and more aerodynamic.

That is a good point you make about Valbee. That foot strike... let's just say it's problematic.
The physics says that this is NOT the ideal way for a runner to propel themselves forward. Is it possible that the cross training is leading to poor form. I don't recall seeing this issue last year.

This is silly.
Faith Kipyegon is a decent bit more muscular than Sifan Hassan; both are phenomenal athletes.
Kipyegon’s leg is twice the size as Hassan’s.
Different athletes have different body types. If Tuohy has managed to be muscular at the top level and stay injury free, then this is the right weight that works forher. She just ran a PR on that course. You guys act like she’s suddenly dropped to middle of the pack.
To be criticizing a successful young woman athlete’s weight, when this sport already has a high tendency to enable eating disorders, is not only problematic but malicious.

Yes, as I mentioned, given what it is apparent, KT is amazing. She's twice the size of Kipyegon and Hassan, but still getting around on the course pretty well. She's like one of the women at the Crossfit Games.
Just because someone tells the truth... that weight is a component, that is NOT "enabling" EDs. That is so messed up and wrong. It's as though people have no concept of self-responsibility for their own dumasss decisions. I could not have been more clear (and it shouldn't have to be said, but I knew there would be idiots like you turn up) that EDs are NOT the way to go. But once again, all athletes should avoid EDs. They lead to bad outcomes that reach far beyond running. There is no benefit to gain from ED behaviors, running or otherwise.

Literally everyone knows weight is part of the equation. But looking at a photo of someone who looks like Katelyn Tuohy and saying they definitely need to lose weight is exactly the kind of thing that enables eating disorders. Especially when its not a healthy level you are looking for but "getting ride of a 15 lb weight vest" which implies its a number you are looking for her to weight not a health/strength thing. A random girl HS or MS runner looking at this thread and leaving thinking they need to look more like X and not like Y and be as close to X lbs as possible to be successful is problematic because they may not have a body type that can healthily function at that that weight/look. I mean hell you talk about Kipyegon and Hassan and the only direct comparison you can find to not being that skinny is Lizzo? Wtf is wrong with you?

The only reason I mentioned Kipyegon and Hassan is because they were brought up by someone else as examplars of being very different body types. However, it turns out that both appear to avoid extra unnecessary weight. If Touhy were a younger developing female who may not have a conventional build, then I would just say that it is great that she can run so well nontheless. However, she is beyond puberty, and she is clearly bigger than last year (at age 21). This expansion is from her choices, not body type. If she doesn't care about it and is satisfied, then that's up to her. But let's be real.
You say that everyone knows that weight is a part of the equation just like everyone knows that obesity is one of the worst health crisis our country has ever seen. But, do you believe people really know? It sure looks like many don't. People can't even stomach a conversation about it.
You are right that people may be healthy and thin and not look quite as thin as some, and that is no knock on them. They should be confident and proud of their excellent work. That is not Touhy, though, and neither is it Lizzo. Pretending never helps anyone.
