Big kudos to Jim for moving out to Europe and getting paid for that choice! Shows how often the solution to take another step as an athlete often is evident for the athlete, you just have to commit. No question that it helps to do as the romans when in rome. (Winner of CCC men and female lives in the same area or region in Norway as Kilian do, mens winner of OCC men some hours south of that.)

With Walmsley now about 10 miles from the finish, I was rereading about him getting lost while on course record pace at mile 93 of Western States back in 2016. Walmsley had too many fan boys, but you have to admire his dedication and ability to come back after multiple brutal failures. He has paid his dues on the UTMB course. I hope he doesn't get lost!
Agree.
As an original Coconino Cowboy, some of the talk around him being a genuine chance for the 2020 Olympic team was painful.
That being said, Big Jim's dedication to this event has been unbelievable. Uprooting his wife (alongside his wife moving with him) to move to France, and spend 365 days a year working on his weaknesses is absolutely incredible.
He had a genuine chance for the 2020 Olympic team as much as you can consider any possible top 10-15 might have had a chance with a lot of tossups/possibilities ahead of the race. He was a place in front of Jared Ward and was running without supershoes. Another marathon build up plus supershoes and he would have been in the game. It's not like the people who made or have made the US marathon team in 2016 or 2020 are all amazing talents. Going for it, especially burning more energy without supershoes that everyone else was wearing, was predictably going to result in a bit of a blow up. Lets put it this way. If Jake Riley were wearing Jim's shoes, and Jim was wearing Jakes, Jim likely would have been ahead of Jake.
Sticking with the shoes of who pays you made sense and is admirable. Especially since those tests that showed the shoe was not a supershoe didn't come out until later.

That was classic “how do you feel?” “ I feel awful”
also what is up with letting people crowd the finish chute so much, coming around that corner with the flag poles and f$cking trash can, I was worried someone was going to trip!
I also wonder what time Francois would have had in 2017. The course was shortened about 5k in which he finished in 19:01. Should be around 19:21-22, so faster than both Killians and Jim's times.
Good note for those that think the field isn’t as deep this year, when Courtney set the cr in 2021 she was 7th overall, this year she’s looking at top 20.
