Well, Burns is in better shape aerobically than ever before so he saw himself as dropping commensurately in the mile, but likely the aerobic work came at the cost of speedwork. No one was really going with Sowinski, so he slowed down and tried to get them to pick up a bit, but they were just 60 in the second lap, so the record chase was gone. Birnbaum was the strongest but didn't want any of the pace until the last lap. He might still have another second or two in him. Matsatsa was impressive. He didn't blow past everyone with the 1:48 speed in the last 200m as seemed possible but he merely dropped his pr 7 seconds and skipped 3:59. Heidisch impressed yet again. Hansen dropped to 3:58.
