Based on the info on tfrrs and the lead he had in the video, it looks like the victim was going for a PR (or possibly a sub 4:30).

Horrible act. Deserves severe punishment. Far less horrible but still rather disturbing are the brainless comments of some here. You can lead a horse to water.

I don’t see this as a race issue, it is the age-old conflict of sprinters vs. distance runners. Sprinters think they own the track and that distance races are a waste of time, even though I could run a mile in the time it takes them to get into the starting blocks. Notice that the sprinter had to wait for the racers to come around again, because if he had followed them for a lap he would have been too tired to throw a punch.

Sprinters can own lanes 3-8, and distance runners can trample them when they stray.

I can add this to my list of reasons why I will never visit Florida again. I've even paid more for flights to avoid a layover in Florida. It's my own personal boycott of the state.

This has to be the most racist thread on letsrun. Yes he obviously needs to be punished but the racism is astounding here

When you run in an organized race, the racers have a right to the track. Someone can't just set up a hotdog stand in the lane. The organizers have an obligation to clear the track. Since two prior contacts had occurred, the organizers were clearly negligent by not intervening.

The only aggressor in this case was the puncher. He does not have a right to be in the lane. As a result of that (let's say) oversight, he initiated contact. The victim tried to warn.

It should also be investigated whether the coach of the aggressor had anything to do with this situation. There is a parallel in a HS girl's basketball game in CA from a few months back. I recall reading that the aggressor was encouraged by her mom to take down her opponent.

In a running event, there is some bumping, shoving, and spiking. Hard to tell (or difficult to prove) whether on purpose or inadvertent. The sucker punch was, nevertheless, intentional and a physical assault. I would ask PD to investigate their officers' judgement or show the video to the DA.

Either take this before a jury and prosecute the aggressor or raise him a statue for standing up for himself - he either had a right to be where he was or he didn't. But if someone has every right to interfere with your race, then why race? Why place yourself in danger of being sucker punched.

This doesn't reflect well on the principles behind HS athletics. We will have to see how the responsible bodies react. If this is ignored and not prosecuted, we might as well give up on this sort of activity because ignorance would just encourage copycats who may have always wondered whether they could actually do that.

So, FL HS athletics and local PD, please clarify your position.

Seems that everytime certain people congregate, racist bile spews forth. This website is a prime example. The same people will happily turn around and accuse others of playing the "race card" though. Pure comedy.

At any rate, I hope both boys get punished. You don't get push people who are you in your way (that's called assault) and punching someone (also assault) is a disproportionate reaction to being pushed.

Given the backstory, the idea that only one of these boys committed a violent is truly bizarre, yet oh so predictable.
