My high schooler wants to completely commit to sub 16 5k or 410 mile. Who can I pay to make this happen?

Thanks for reviving this thread! We went for it and hired a coach online. There were bumps along the way but my son ultimately ran 15:51 in the 5k and got to 4:04 in the mile! There is room for improvement as he is only at 1:58 in the 800m. We focused more on strength than speed and he ran an 8:48 in the 3200m along the way. The focus is shifting to speedwork as he transitions to college. Expect big things!

Thanks for responding! I am on record as being willing to pay someone to coach my son to a 4:10 mile OR a sub 16min 5k. What about my son's times make less sense?

Anyone who runs 4:04 in the mile is going to run faster than 1:58 for 800. I ran 1:55/4:13/9:05 back in the day, and I was 'slow' for my top speed running a 400 meter split in 52 seconds. Another person in my state who actually ran a 4:04 was running 1:52 or 1:51 and 8:50's... So a 1:58 is rubbish and not at all plausible. This isn't even the original poster. And this kid probably never made it to those times.

maybe the kid only ran the 800 in practice, or maybe that was his split on the way to the 4:04. I know my only 400 times (46.8) came from mile relay splits and they don't make sense as I could only barely break 1:47

The 5k time is also way off. So way off on the 800m and way off on the 5k. Nope just a fake post.

Most high schoolers are more speed based than endurance. Endurance takes years to develop. Even on many collegiate teams there are athletes who can run sub 4:10 miles but have trouble cracking 15:00 in the 5km (for 800/1500 guys).

If your school coach is useless see if there is a local training group that has some track athletes to join instead. If your son is already decently quick, talk to the local college to see if he can train with them. If in doubt Jack Daniels has some very good training plans in his books.

If you are real, then what's his name? Sounds like a real success story. Also, why can't he run faster than a 1:58? Have you guys tried to go on an all out 800? If he ran a 4:04, I think he could at least do a 1:56, go out on a 56 second lap and cruise the last one in 60.

Huge difference between a sub 16 and a 4:10. I ran 4:04. And had a 5k xc time in the 14:30s. 4:10 probably worth 14:55 or so.

How are the mods so awful at removing these obvious spam posts? Christ.
