This has been a great thread. Now it's time to get to work and be the unicorn who makes 400k a year, works 20 hours a week, is 11/10 happiness and runs their collegiate PRs in their 40s.

I started out in product development as an early member of start-up. Start-up sold to fortune 100 company (cha-ching)... have worked up the ladder over the last 3 years to VP level where bulk of compensation is equity/performance based. The 1.1m listed above includes some final retention pay-outs (hence the big drop in 2015) but does not include the actual cash from our acquisition.
I am not a CS major but am a pretty good self-taught full stack developer whose current life is basically strategy/sales and high level program management. I am very much looking forward to going small again and rolling up my sleeves a bit.
IT (Servers & Storage Specialist)
approx 55 hours/week
105k/year - good benefits & 401k match
4 to 8/10 - varied stress levels - some times are good but stretches of high pressure, not anywhere near enough people to do projects. Work w//good people worldwide - company has offices in most countries. I can work from home 2-3 days a week. Wife has had major health issues last few years so that probably contributes to stress. Very fortunate we have no money worries anymore - kids through college and on their own, we own our home, owe nothing so can save a lot. I can't complain.
Healthcare Finance Consultant
In the office for 40 hours. Don't spend all of it working hard...

5/10 - Low rating mostly because it is boring. Well worth it as non work time is 10/10. I have a gym in my building to workout before or after work. Lots of opportunity to move up the ladder if I chose to work hard. I'm 29 and have worked as an engineering, but that was probably a 5/10 happiness too.
Engineering executive - large tech firm
40-60 hours depending on what's on fire. probably average 45-50.

8/10. adrenalin, work at home flexible hours, some cool travel, offset by stress and corporate bullshit
Apparently if you are on LRC you are either a coach/educator or a professional in highly specialized and technical field.

Overall, I'm not too happy with my job. It is often either boring and/or stressful. I also don't know how I can make it another 30 years at a desk job. There's pretty limited social interaction or autonomy.

Salary: £35k ($50k)
Benefits: >27 days leave (+8 public holidays), solid pension scheme
Happiness: 8. Pretty good overall. Bureaucratic and slow at times, pretty interesting and low stress most of the time.
To the teachers out there:
Would you recommend teaching to me? Is it worthwhile? I'm a sophomore college math kid, and am thinking about teaching. Some people love it, and some just absolutely hate it. To me, it sounds awesome. I could coach, run, work less in the summers, and do something I hope would be rewarding. My other option in grad school for math. That doesn't sound too bad to me either. I guess I just want some outside opinions on what the teaching field is actually like. So would you guys recommend it to me?

8-4:30, occasional / rare weekend - 40-50 hours. Short (15-20 min) commute, unless visiting a job site. Some travel.
$100k + bonus (0-$30k). 401K, 4 weeks vacation. Medical & dental (thankfully, I don't need vision...yet).
Job: 6/10. The money is good and things are fine when we're not busy, but when you have three projects under deadline it can be pretty stressful. Deal with a lot of knuckleheads.
Life: 8 or 9/10. Single, no kids. Girlfriend holds her own. Hoping to retire in less than 10 yrs. Nice vehicles, rent a condo. Live simply.

30-35 hours (paid for 40, but I come in late, leave early and "work from home")

Happiness: 6/10. Easy, boring job, no stress. Haven't had a raise in 5 years (was making more in 2010). Huge company, work for small product team in satellite office, no room for advancement, not visible outside my team.

17 years teaching, fourth year in admin.

Hours can be irregular depending on general level of mayhem that 900 students [and their parents] are wreaking that week, but average about 55 hours a week for 40 weeks of the year, about 15 hours a week for 6 weeks, and sweet sweet zero for six glorious weeks of the year.
Happiness: with the politics of my job, a 7. But it is never dull. With the education part, a 9. With my life, a 9.8.

2.5/10 (job) - motivation has been really going down because the desire and dream is to become a top athlete (local) + a qualified running coach.
8.5/10 (life in general) - because I do what I want after I finish work, and hence can dedicate my own time as and how I wish, mostly related to running itself.
forgot to add: very unhappy with the income I get. Compared to the many of you (if your posts are for real) I am close to minimum wage...
University lecturer

'officially' 37.5 hrs per week, but difficult to determine exactly what I do as never really 'off' . You cant decide in advance that 'at 2pm I will sit at my desk and proceed to have good ideas for the next 2 hours'. Tend to do most of my thinking whilst out and about (especially when running) and when at work I think about other stuff.
5/10. Its nice to be able to earn a salary teaching and researching what I'm genuinely interested in. The admin load and bureaucracy is ridiculous though

30-100 hours a week but usually around 50. Work from home a lot.

Current happiness is 6/10. I'm 55 now and will retire within the next two years. Used to be 10/10 happiness but as life goes on our priorities change.

Usually in at 9 and home by 5:00, but the work is intense while I'm at the office with back to back meetings, frequent deadlines, pressure to bring in millions in research funding, and people to hire, keep busy, and develop. And I'm the the last line of defense on research quality control. So maybe 8.5/10 on happiness, with the points off for stress and not enough energy to exercise (I have no problem getting in shape when I'm on extended vacations). Most of all, I wish I could truly relax and hang out my family and friends daily. But lots of points for interesting work and pay that makes me feel like I can quit or job share soon and spend quality time with kids before college.
Actuary, 40 hrs/wk when not studying. 50-65 hrs when studying (credentialing process involves a few years of taking tests)

6/10 - this is a lot better than my previous career, and my salary will probably double within another 6-7 years which will be nice, but it's still work. I'd still rather not be here.

This is exactly what I want to do, minus the words serial and 37. Do you have any advice for a young guy looking to follow to same path (I'm 21) besides the normal advice like don't give up equity, etc? Thanks
