Really? 75%? Can you back that stupid statistic up? Give me a list of the jobs that have a pre-determined list of candidates...
I doubt every school has enough clout to have a group of candidates lined up before the job opens up to the public? Especially as someone said at the D3 level...those openings at Plattsburgh and West Florida and even a D1 like Siena aren't going to have a wish list, they are looking for up and coming young guys who are looking to put time in to either build the program up and fill the position.
Those jobs don't pay well enough to generate a behind the scenes search

I have a hard time believing any highly qualified older coach will want to go into that situation...XC only teams don't perform very well typically so that is not exactly a "plush" situation considering they aren't too strong

Temple has not hired a distance coach yet and its been almost a year. Any update on their situation?
Temple pays $10k a year for their part time distance coach. Kinda hard to get someone t stay their too long.
Who did Northwood hire? Not everybody knows..
