You seriously don't think limiting the availability of drugs helps? Availability, whether it be of alcohol, food, porn, or anything else addicting, certainly contributes to the problem.
This. The infamous rat park experiments show availability and accessibility are main keys to addiction (along with lack of social interactions, of course). Make access more difficult and the behaviors mostly stop. Same with vets returning from Vietnam who had picked up heroin addictions and never touched it again upon touching down in the US.

I'm free to leave my bike unlocked at the beach when I go surfing, because I know it will be there when I return. I'm free to lose my wallet, because I know it will be returned to me with everything in it.
Women are free to walk home late at night, because they know they are safe. Very young children are free to walk to school and play in the local parks, for the same reason. Elderly people are free to weave down the streets on their bicycles, because they know that drivers will go out of their way to yield to them.
By many measures, Japanese are much freer than Americans are.

If Fox did actually threaten to harm Larner's wife because of Larner's story, which seemed like straightforward reporting, this Fox dude is just an unbelievable a-hole who deserves spend a few years reflecting on his ways in a Japanese prison.

Obviously not top shape but he'll be at least sub-elite with training. Genetics don't just go away.

He wasn't even smart enough to allow himself that kind of plausible deniability.
"Won't end til that article is gone," he said in an email to Larner, which makes it clear that it's an attempt to intimidate and coerce.
It's amazing that a single shortsighted careless decision can have such a significant impact on someone's life. He probably spent a few minutes contemplating shipping the pills to Japan, and now he's suffering significant life-changing consequences.

I don't think there are many people who think the actual crime in isolation deserves a prison sentence. More than there are many (me included) who absolutely think Fox deserves some sort of comeback for his reprehensible behaviour on repeated occasions over a prolonged period of time.

It's a total mystery why you ride the jock of middling athletes so hard. Yet you assuming you can know what kind of person he is based on his appearance in a scripted, edited video is certainly telling. Normal/decent people don't take illegal drugs to Japan, certainly not via courier. That's degeneracy.

I spent 2 weeks in Japan last summer. I absolutely loved it. As you mentioned it is an extremely safe country.
Safe is different than free, and often at odds with freedom. I looked into the drug laws and customs process in Japan, and it was very clear that I should not bring in any medicinal THC. Also, I take prescription Klonopin on occasion for anxiety/sleep, and that is also illegal (as is adderall if I recall). I don’t drink because I think alcohol is worse than both, and you can pound liquor all day long.
The drug policies are very tough in Japan. While I believe the US to be way over medicated, I do like the freedom to take certain drugs when I feel like it.
I think the drug laws are the only thing that would keep me from moving to Japan. It’s the greatest place I’ve ever visited. I just wouldn’t call it more free; it’s safer by a big margin.
