You can have your faith, but don't go out there saying your failure wasn't a product of your insufficient preparation, but rather it was "God's plan." Doing so is the easiest (and sadly, the most accepted) way to absolve oneself of personal responsibility. That's the real problem.

The real beauty of the Christian faith, is that Jesus is right there with us whether we "Win" or "Lose". It's never contingent upon our performance, but rather on his eternal love for us.

One's faith then becomes a form of brown nosing. That if one shouts up at the sky and says please Lord I beg you to give me what I want he will answer because he is an arrogant being. A being who enjoys his subordinates bowing to him, and telling him how great he is. You will be rewarded for you sycophancy.
It's efficacy only works when one gets positive results in life. When one gets negative results one learns to hate God. In this way the rich and successful can bask in God's divine love, and the poor and failing can hate God, the world and themselves. As God's unwillingness to give them success is proof of their worthlessness.
But as we can see in life there are many rich and successful people who are monsters and many poor people who are generally good and well behaved. But what God brings to those who worship him properly is a calmness in the face of life's difficulties. Even horrors can be overcome. But this is not about "getting rich" or winning, this is a purity of spirit that inspires a feeling that win, lose or draw God is with me, God is good, and I am blessed whatever happens.
It isn't her particular religion she is referring to as "truth", it is her belief in God which is the purpose of all religions.
The belief in God isn’t the purpose. That belief is the means to an end. The end being feeding our most dominant evolutionary drive. The need to be in control. The first uses of religion was as a way to give us a sense of control over our food source, which is why religion began with animism. If we worshipped animal spirits appropriately, they would repay our hunter-gatherer selves with an abundant hunt. As we evolved into farmers, religion evolved to weather gods we could all pray to. As tribes became civilizations, religion evolved into something that saw only a chosen few (leaders) have outsized influence with god… thus reaching its modern purpose. As a means for leadership and others in power to control their masses.

I think that people have issues with athletes that publicly praise The Lord, then turn around and make tabloid headlines partying hard, banging everything in sight, act foolishly, insult their rivals, and other behavior that is antithetical to their claimed faith.
It's the hypocrisy of a few that makes people roll their eyes whenever a wealthy athlete or celebrity decides to play the God card.

This is a good explanation. A true Christian faith recognizes that God gives us the tools and strength, and we do what we will with them. God does not give us the results or the triumphs.
The flaw I find in many athletes is that they believe God gives them the results, good (like SML) or bad (like Nia Akins). It's a weird idea of faith to me, tbh. It's our role as human beings to do what we can with what God has given us, not to expect God to be responsible for certain result.
SML takes it to another level with the cult-like church she is involved in and the oddly obedient relationship she describes with her husband and coach. And the fact they believe there is only one truth for everybody and they are foolish for not understanding.
