Trabuco ran 17:46 in the invite while Woodbridge ran 17:47. Still close and they definitely should've been in the invite, but just a correction to what you said.
At least Woodbridge had only 1 senior and 0 juniors in the lineup. So next year they will have a chance to make the Invite.
Yosemite would have gotten second to last in the seeded race. Don’t know how they made the invite this year. But next year they return 3 guys + Stegge. All will be seniors. No depth behind that. Hopefully they will have a better team than this year.

Oh, and speaking of Yosemite & Woodbridge, I heard Yosemite jogged the Woodbridge invite last fall
I’m relatively new to the HS running scene- just started following it last spring because my kids started running. I live in California and just assumed that J Serra would win. I’d never heard of Union Catholic and now see that they’ve had 20 girls break 2:20 since 2016. That’s insane. (I also had never heard of Newbury Park til my daughter told me about them last spring when she started running.)
I hear from so many parents that you shouldn’t have the kids train too much before high school. Yet it looks like almost all the Union Catholic and J Serra girls started in elementary school.

like all sports, running has its fair share of people who train from a young age.
jserra and union catholic also recruit. there was actually a huge controversy about union catholic a while ago.

Jserra and Union Catholic are private schools. Unlike a public school, no one is forced to go to a private school, so of course private schools have to recruit to get students. Not just to get students who do sports but to get students in general. That's how all private schools work and it's not a "huge controversy" like you claim.

If you think that's insane, guess what another Union Catholic girl did in 2016? Sydney McLaughlin made the Olympic Team.
California runners are good, but there are lots of better runners in other states. Look at the results from NXN and Foot Locker. Not many California runners in the top 10.

I don't really follow cross country but it seems like Newbury Park and Great Oak were doing pretty well a year ago.

The best runner in the world right now has been training essentially as a pro since he was like 9. I think before high school it's easier for kids to burn out if you push them too hard, but if they want to train harder/want to be better, there's not as much of a risk. I know you could've thrown me more hard stuff in middle school and I would've loved it.

Newbury Park and Great Oak were great, but both of their coaches left. Sean Brosnan, the old Newbury Park coach, got a coaching job at UCLA for ~a year, but sadly he got fired. Doug Soles, the old Great Oak coach, moved to Herriman (Utah I think), and they just won NXN last year, with Soles becoming the first guy to win NXN titles at different schools. You can check
, and you'll see most of them came from athletes who were coached by Soles for either most or all of HS. Newbury Park results have kinda just fallen off a cliff.
As a general rule of thumb, the best individuals in the country (like top 10 at NXN) are the best because they have the most talent. The best programs in the country are the best because they have the best coaching. A mix of those gets you something like Newbury Park 2019-2023, American Fork ~2016-2017, American Fork 2024, and probably Herriman in the foreseeable future (they get the benefit of altitude training, as does AF).
stand in stark contrast to Great Oak's. 6 guys at 9:12 or faster already this year, with the only other 2 guys in the top 8 coming from last year (where one guy ran 8:43).
I think being fair and nuanced on this, the best high school programs also train their guys/girls the hardest and most extensively. For the boys, 60+ mpw in junior/senior year, strength training, more practice time, weekend practices, training camps etc. The coaches are definitely both good and demanding. Sometimes they may cross the line. For the best individuals, it’s nuanced because some (like Cole Hocker) are being held back by their HS coaches and running low-mileage while others have private coaches or are on these very serious programs and are training a whole lot. All will have some talent, but some may have more untapped potential that emerges in college.

Gert didn't allow him full training until he was 12, if I recall correctly.
Terrible environment at Arcadia tonight. Been going for years and it seems fake and forced. What happened to the meet. Very disappointing
I know some people that no longer go, because they think $22 + online fees to get into a mid season high school track meet is to much money. I always wondered how much they made off of this thing.

The entrance fee is nothing. The out of state kids pay for a plane flight and hotel. If they can afford that then the entrance fee won't stop them.
