Religion is primitive tribalism at its best. That's why the US gov't developed with the intent of separation of religion and state. The founders were mostly Christian, but understood the limits of its benefit. What is amazing to me, to get back to the op's subject is how despite the difficulty of life in the late 1700's and early 1800's they managed the time to delve so deeply into historical reference to develop the experiment we know today as a balanced representative government unlike any other. Of course none of the founders spent hours and hours training for a marathon or such.
I guess I would also go back and make friends with the natives and smoke some good grass with them. As for the black people I guess I didn't consider that factor. I would try and give them some land to own so they could prosper like everyone else.
I read that several of this country's early founders lived into their 80's.
You do realize that some people live longer than average😂 And the upper class tends to always live longer. And odds are you aren’t going to be one of the upper class…
Seems like back then, things were better, no tv. No Internet, just living off the land.
tread carefully because 150 years ago had you told your wife you would put in a minimum of 40 mpw she would've left you for the first cowboy she found on the road lol
Did you know peak Black house ownership peaked before the “Civil Rights Act”?
Now, why is that?
google it.
Probably because it is INCORRECT. Peak black home ownership came around the year 2000 at approximately 46%. This is roughly 5% higher than the highest ever recorded prior to the Civil Rights Act (which does not require quotes, by the way).
Next time you want to spout fallacies, try to catch yourself and actually post something that is true. You'll feel better for it.
is this the new conservative vogue, to pretend like the gilded age was actually nice? you understand that basically caused the conditions that led to the crash, great depression, new deal, minimum wage and maximum hour laws, child labor laws, all borne of the excesses of the time? life expectancy of 40? before antibiotics, most vaccines?
this country is getting dumber and dumber.
A lot of conservatives believe that everyone but them is lazy and soft, but because of all the innovations that make life better, those lazy week liberals stil survive.....BUT if we all go back to when life was very hard then all the liberals would die and the strong manly conservatives would survive

This was 138 years ago but, nevertheless an absolutely stunning mile race between Walter George and William Cummings. Think about this for a moment, when was the last time 30,000 spectators showed up for a single mile race between just 2 people? If you were a miler or involved in the ultra marathon “pedestrianism” events back then, it really was the absolute peak in popularity of running.
Please forgive me for quoting from Wikipedia, but I’m lazy and it’s a good race report:
“The long-awaited mile challenge race was held on 31 August 1885 at Lillie Bridge, witnessed by some 30,000 spectators. Crowds of people angry they had been denied entry broke through the closed entry gates and ended up completely encircling the running track both inside and out.
Cummings arrived at 5:30 pm and walked two laps of the track. George, caught in traffic, arrived shortly before 6:00 pm and climbed over the crowd with a ladder as the risk of injury pushing through the crowd was too great. Nevertheless, both runners had to force their way through the crowds with their handlers.
Betting was heavy, with Cummings favored over George. At the gun, George dashed ahead, with Cummings close behind, in a steady rain. Cummings, who had won the coin toss, had chosen the third-of-a-mile rectangular cinder track at the site over the favored quarter-mile cycling track. At the quarter mile point of the race, hindered by the slow track with sharp corners, George led with 58+3⁄5, a torrid pace which the crowd enthusiastically cheered. But Cummings was close enough to be able to touch George's heels with his fingertips. At the half-mile point, they were at 2:01, and the crowd went delirious. At 1,000 yards, Cummings pulled even. At the three-quarter mark, George was at 3:07+1⁄2, only half a second slower than the world record pace.
Instead of slowing, George kept the pace, and Cummings struggled to keep up. Halfway through the final lap, Cummings gave up and started to walk, and since winning was the main concern today, George slowed to a walk when he was far enough ahead. Cummings, urged by his boosters, started to run again, which caused George to start to run again. He beat Cummings by some 65 yards in a time of 4:20+1⁄5, remarkably fast given his leisurely last lap.”
Jim Crow segregation hadn't yet been installed in the South at that point, stripping black men of the right to vote. But that's what young black men of that era would have to look forward to as the years clicked forward. No women could vote, of course, until another 45+ years went by. Nor could anybody other than a white man vote, or participate freely in any aspect of government. So if you were American Indian, or Chinese, etc.: keep to your place.
May we assume that your post is addressed solely to white guys who don't care about those other people? Seems like a reasonable conclusion.
If you lived in the South, you were beginning to see chain gangs as convict leasing slowly spread. That feels like a step back from today, when convicts in stripes, crews of them, still clean Mississippi's highwaysides, but WITHOUT chains.

For those who think it would be great to live 150 years ago, they should go to a Civil War reenactment and visit the medical tent to see how medicine treatment was provided back then. Surgeries that we take for granted, like an impacted wisdom tooth, were often done with NO anesthesia. So were amputations. To prevent infection or to stop it's spread, legs were amputated without anesthesia. They had to be amputated because penicillin hadn't been discovered yet. Diseases like smallpox, Tuberculosis, and whooping cough killed many or scarred them for life. King Tut was the emperor of the greatest civilization of his age, but died in his teens from complications of a broken leg and malaria.
Or... imagine trying to sleep at night in summer in Florida 150 years ago with no AC and no electric fans! Leave the windows open and mosquitos the size of small aircraft attack you all night long. Imagine wanting an orange, pineapple, or banana... good luck with that unless you work near a plantation in the tropics.

I take little week long trips and do just that (camp out, fish, scavenge, hunt, etc.), but that is long enough. Although I’d be fine without the Distraction of the internet. I enjoy heat, running water, and not having to starve for long stretches.

What a stupid post. Things were better how? They didn't have Charmain or Bounty or Colgate or proper dental care. And black people and people of colour were suffering amazing levels of discrimination. Sometimes some of you people are willfully ignorant.
FFS look to the future and how you can make it better.
