With Walmsley now about 10 miles from the finish, I was rereading about him getting lost while on course record pace at mile 93 of Western States back in 2016. Walmsley had too many fan boys, but you have to admire his dedication and ability to come back after multiple brutal failures. He has paid his dues on the UTMB course. I hope he doesn't get lost!
If you've watched previous year's streams, you'll notice that the last part of the finishing climb he was just on is the same as always. The part leading to that looked different from previous years to detour around a landslide, but it makes sense that it has the same total climb because the detour reaches the same high point at La Flegere. On the stream, they have been saying that it's the same climb and distance. If the post above is correct that it's slightly longer, that's good too.

No, you see, they started this years race at the top of a mountain and it will finish at the bottom of the mountain. uh huh. Lol.

Agree.
As an original Coconino Cowboy, some of the talk around him being a genuine chance for the 2020 Olympic team was painful.
That being said, Big Jim's dedication to this event has been unbelievable. Uprooting his wife (alongside his wife moving with him) to move to France, and spend 365 days a year working on his weaknesses is absolutely incredible.
