At-large is decided by nxn committee. Right now my personal at-large distribution would be - 1) Riverton 2) Niwot 3) Vandegrift 4) Franklin 5) Rocky Mountain. Depending on California, Northeast, Southeast, New York put out at their nxr, that could change.
However, based on my analysis it is likely Vandegrift gets the at-large. Northeast, Southeast, and New York don't look to have 3rd teams that are strong enough. California is a mixed bag, who knows how good they are. They could be falling apart, or they could be great. Northeast is completely overrated and doesn't deserve an at-large.
California will get an at large but barely.
1) Riverton
2) Franklin
3) Vandegrift
4) San Clemente/Great Oak/Oakdale/Dana Hill**
**Dana if they end up third in the merge due to running in the afternoon compared to early morning for D1 races.
Thanks for the replies. As of now, the Fresno forecast is pretty good with a temp of mid 50s and no rain for Dana Hills. Of course, we're still a week out.

Let's hold off on California, we won't know how good they really are until their state meet. Niwot should be 2nd, Franklin should be 4th. Franklin lost to Valor Christian 9th at nxr southwest. Rocky Mountain 5th at nxr northwest was beat by Layton and Orem at bob firman whom placed 5th at 20th at nxr southwest. Even Torrey Pines, a team that couldn't qualify to the california state meet beat Bozeman 7th nxr northwest and Seattle Prep 5th nxr northwest at Nike Hole in the Wall. Crater, 2nd nxr northwest placed 7th at Woodbridge. Northwest was good last year but their resume this season is quite bad when in comparison to Vandegrift and Southwest teams.
It'll all come down to what Rich G's committee is looking for.....who you beat/didn't beat 6 weeks ago, or are you hot at the right time? There's always 30ish teams that can logically attempt to explain their way into an NXN at-large bid, but a 8ish will be left out each year. In Rich G we trust.

I should also add that Dana Hills and Trabuco Hills went up to Bob Firman and it made the California region look really bad. Rich even made a statement on how it would be hard to earn an at-large bid after that race.

Dana was ranked 5th in California at that time and trabuco was ranked 7th… Rich was moreso talking about if both Dana and Trabuco tried to get to NXN as an at large they would have trouble due to that result. Two months later and things have drastically changed for Dana and they should get an auto now. San Clemente and Great Oak have a good chance of getting at large if if either gets third since they have several wins against each other. Like I stated earlier, if Dana gets third in the merge, they had a good shot of getting an at large behind Great Oak and San Clemente since they have four wins against in total. Two wins from Clovis over GO and San Clemente
One win from Orange County over San Clemente
One win from South Coast League finals over San Clemente.
Franklin at Nike Portland had their #4 runner sick, and #3 runner lost shoe 1k in and refused to drop out. #5 runner struggled but that was his last sub par race of season.

You have to remember that strength of a team during invintational season isn't always a perfect prediction of how the team will do during championship season.
Look at Layton's Strava's. They've been doing 400, 600, 800, 1k repeats at race pace or faster since the early season. They got really good for races like Bob Firman, but fizzle out for races like NXR southwest.
As the speedratings clearly indicate, teams like Franklin and Rocky got better throughout the season, and are better right now than the 3rd place team in every region except the southwest, and MUCH better than the 4th team in each region.
I saw someone post on here saying that part of the reason Rocky wasn't selected last year was due to them being not "hot" enough at the moment. I.E, they didn't have a ton of momentum. Well if Rich and company have learned anything from their mistakes, then given what we have seen from the NXR results so far, Franklin very much deserves an at-large, and Rocky should be a strong consideration.
rocky isn’t making it… can we stop talking about this team
I was talking primarily about Franklin which I feel strongly should get an at-large. Considering Rocky was six points off of them and did better on both average speed rating and average team time, it's only natural to at least consider them.

Speed ratings are literally a factor of time. If they have a faster team average, then of course they will have a faster speed rating.

Rocky won’t be making it. Better luck next time and hope they travel out of region.

But then how would a 24 minute boy that didn’t run a step over the summer and screws around at practice know they are as important as Landon Heemeyer?
The fact that the coaches (all three were D1 runners, and 2 of them very good) don’t understand that you have to actually beat good teams, or refuse to, and lean on the reasoning that they won’t travel to big meets unless they can take everyone bc they don’t want kids to feel left out, is insane. You’re deciding that the feelings of the kids that don’t work as much or as hard is as important as the opportunities for the kids busting their butts.
I hope that Rocky runners think about if this coach is really helping them get to the next level or is stroking his own ego and make their own decisions accordingly.

And since these coaches are all so experienced and accomplished, shouldn't we trust that they are doing what's best for these kids? Why should anyone care about your opinion random person on the internet, hiding behind anonymity?
It would take you 5 minutes to find rocky coach's contact information. If you're so repulsed by the way they coach, (after all, winning is all that matters and they aren't doing a great job of that according to you) then just shoot the head coach and email and rip into him the same way you rip into these people online.
I'd love to see a conversation between the Rocky coaches and all these haters on Letsrun who can't help but backseat coach while simultaneously knowing about ~2% of the story. It's ridiculous how one person says anything about how Rocky might be anything close to good, and then immediately 2 or 3 people rip into them, the coaches, the team, and anything Rocky related.
I understand that sometimes people who act like you can occasionally forget to think about the ramifications of things before they type it out, but let's please try to be a little better about appreciating and respecting those who pour hundreds of hours into kids for very little pay and acknowledgment of their accomplishments (and this goes for anyone who's coaching not just the Rocky ones).
I don’t think anyone on these boards will truly ever understand what the Rocky coaching staff is all about. Their “why” and their value system goes against what this world puts stock into. As a parent of a runner in their program, I have seen No egos needed to be stroked with those coaches. The way they are building is never going to please the fans on here ranting about stuff as trivial as high school cross country. Intentionally investing in a large team of kids combined with full buy in from top to bottom in their program has resulted in a Top 4 finish in the northwest region for their girls and boys teams in 2022 and 2023 (not going to count 2021 since teams were missing from NXR Nw)…..a team that never had Northwest aspirations prior to 2018.

There’s miles in between “winning is everything” and “everyone matters the same.”
Your entire argument is disingenuous. Take your kids to some meets or stfu online about not getting selected. They should know the criteria. They don’t want to play by those rules, then fine, but don’t have your kids, their parents, and members of the coaching staff post online about how unfair it is. Show up and race some people.
Figure out how to get your kids to regional meets or big invites that aren’t in your backyard and how to make your JV kids feel seen. It’s totally possible.

I feel like California acquitted itself at Clovis. 3 of the top 50 times ever at Woodward Park and a 4th just outside of it. I expect to see all 4 (if not more) comfortably in the top 40 times ever at Woodward at state. Definitely deserving of at least one at large regardless of who is 3rd. Reports of California's demise have been greatly exaggerated.

top 40 isn't going to cut it for at-large this year. nxr southwest was crazy

Who knows, you may be correct? Definitely not my decision.
Having said that, if they get 4 under 40, those 4 will be better than last year's 2-4 that did very well at NXN. I just don't think California's as down as people make it sound. There's just no Newbury in this group. However, whoever comes out of California will produce at NXN.
