Your epidemiology is off.
You need to fight brute force (the overwhelming numbers of a respiratory virus) with the brute force of numbers. The pick and choose strategy (protect the old, everyone else can party) of infectious disease management hasn’t and won’t work with COVID 19.
We thought herd immunity would kick in at 70% levels of vaccination. The R6 of delta (6 new infections for every infection) has pushed that to 80 -90 %.
We missed the boat, or are in danger of missing, thanks to dudes like RoJo, who have suddenly become infectious disease epidemiologists. A vaccine is as much a collective treatment as an individual one. But we Americans have somehow forgotten the idea of collective action for the greater good.
The concepts of public health infectious disease prevention aren’t rocket science. Why all of a sudden people have decided to freak out and deny the power of collective vaccination is beyond me.
