How about we wait for a professional medical diagnosis of what "This" is and in the meantime send Kemoy and his family positive thoughts and prayers.

I'll be honest, RF should know better than to have a chance of this happening again. At the very least, he owes it to Ryan to be prepared. The worst that happens is $1000-$1500 is "wasted" of having a couple extra crews stand by for 4 hours and they twiddle their thumbs. Best case is they save a life and/or prevent greater harm by reducing time-to-care for anyone who becomes injured.

You want an AED ever 400 yards for a road race? Why not just mandate that everyone in America have one in their own house? They only cost $1200 each. That will only cost just over $152 billion to put them in all 127 million households in America.

Let's say your proposal to properly staff every track meet in America with an AED on both sides of the track, with EMTs on both sides adds $1,500 to its cost. Do you know how much money that ends up being? How many track meets that is? How many track meets are held at the HS, collegiate and pro level each year? I really have no idea. 25,000? 50,000? Is there anyway to look this up on tfrrs?

Well if it's 50,000 , we just spent $75 million.

If we really want to eliminate all chances of death, why not just cancel the freaking meets all together? If Ryan Shay hadn't been running, he'd be alive today.

Dude...calm down. That poster clearly has experience personally with a severe medical condition that is within the arena of what Kemoy has been suffering. It's like say she/he had epilepsy, and then Kemoy had a seizure. They may not have the EXACT same source for what is causing the seizures, but they are both looking at suffering from that disability for the rest of their athletic careers and likely personal lives if this was not due to some self inflicted poor decision making (excessive alcohol intake ,lack of sleep...etc.). There is more than one reason that one can suffer a seizure, but once you begin having seizures, you are stuck with having to be dependent on anticonvulsants. Unless of course you have a great neurosurgeon, and the source was a brain tumor. There are a few *rare* caveats in those situations, like the one just referenced.

Now, apply that logic to the situation yesterday. It does not mean all heart related conditions or neurological are exactly one in the same, but to suffer the way he did, the referenced poster likely has experienced parallels.

The organizers of Millrose should be embarrassed. I never understood why such high profile events and teams don’t have doctors on site at all times (ER or critical care docs. Not the idiot orthopods who are just there to bring business to their practice and are completely worthless). These are million and billion dollar organizations who are too cheap to pay pennies to have a doctor around for emergencies and urgent issues. (I say the same thing about teams needing handlers for their thug superstars but that’s another issue.)

Kemoy would have been better off if one of the shot putters just picked him up and carried him across the street to Presbyterian, would have taken 5 minutes. Young healthy men usually do fairly well if they are in cardiac arrest for that short of a time. Instead the buffoons at the armory just watched him and got nervous before they started doing compressions. Unfortunately, I fear he is going to have some degree of anoxic brain injury. Whatever scan they did right away likely was too soon to see the extent of the injury.

Very sad. The organizers cost this young man his life. I hope his family sue the pi$$ out of the armory.

Give me a break. I was right there and the response time was completely unacceptable. If it weren't for the several medical people in the audience who literally jumped the fence to get to him after being so upset over the complete apathy shown by the meet, he very well may not have made it. It's understandable that there was initial confusion and a delay because it wasn't obvious he was in a dire state. At first, it looked like maybe he tripped or got spiked and went down because of that. He then was laying completely flat on the inside of the track so it would have been hard for most people to have even seen him (especially because the shot putters and officials were between him and the finish line) The guys in black tuxes who got to him first were judges and not medical people. However, once it was clear that he was unconscious and twitching, there was no sense of urgency by anyone at the meet. EMS was nowhere to be found. The woman with the Columbia jacket was working on him but she was it for far too long. That's why multiple people in the audience jumped over the track to help out (and were the ones doing the CPR). It should be abundantly made clear that random people in the audience -- not anyone associated with the meet -- were doing the bulk of the life saving work for many minutes. It was a horrible feeling sitting there not knowing what to do (people were calling 911 on their mobiles because of how little was happening) and watching what looked like someone dying and no sense of urgency by anyone with Millrose Games. Yes, eventually EMS slowly got there but it was entirely too long. Where was Ray Flynn? He was the race director but he was nowhere to be found. Nobody was in charge or giving orders. Heck, someone ordered the smoke machines to start firing for the shot finals and the meet was lining up the next race. Why was there no protocol for an emergency with the meet doctor or head of EMS taking charge? It's beyond ridiculous that a meet of that level basically is relying on the chance that there are some Good Samaritans with medical training in the audience to do any life saving work. It also should be noted that Max Siegel was right there on the outside of the curve and paid absolutely no attention to the situation. Can you imagine being at an NFL game where someone gets knocked out and there is so little attention being paid to him that people in the stands have to jump onto the field to work on the person?

To answer your idiotic question, yes there should be AEDs on both sides of a facility that large. EMS also should be on the track during the entire meet. They are there for high school meets. There were no EMS officials anywhere to be found. Where were they? Were they on coffee breaks? We should be extremely thankful for the people in the audience who jumped to action to help save him life.

Go back and read this thread. Every single person that was there is stating that the response time was unacceptable.

At the Alabama state indoor meet this year, an employee working one of the coaches' gates collapsed within twenty feet of emergency personnel and died later in the hospital.

AEDS, as well as, EMTs should be stationed at every 2 mile intervals along every insterstate and major road way. Anything less is unacceptable.

Every car should be REQUIRED BY LAW to have an AED in it...plus an Epi-Pen...plus a therapy animal...plus crutches...plus a bag of ice...plus band aids...plus....

When something like this happens it changes a person. I first hand know what he is going through. In 2014 I had expierenced uncomfortable tightness in my chest. I would go to a number of cardiologist who figured it was nothing but indigestion. In 2015 I was running on a track and went code blue. After being revived going to the hospital and waking up in ICU it was confirmed that I not only had a heart condition but a sever blockage in my LAD. Kemoy's condition is serious but given he makes it through this he may never be able to run again the medications are also tough to get used to. He can get his life back and I think he will. Thoughts and prayers are with him and his family.

Rojo, I'm not surprised if there was not an AED machine at the outdoor track at Cornell because there's nowhere to store one, but was there really not one close by in Barton? I would have thought there would for sure be one somewhere on the same floor as the indoor track.

I coached Cross-Country in Upstate NY (not far from Cornell) we HAD to have portable AED's with us for meets and other contests off the high school campus.

The law states that one has to be within a certain distance (1 or 2 minutes run) from the field of play.

Well put. I realize it's not medically accurate, but it's not a stretch to say that people who need CPR are already dead. Without CPR, they are going to stay that way.

PS Plus now that it's all about chest compressions, there's no "yuck" factor.
